I'm enjoying the Guinea Pig: Pet Shop Private Eye series so much that the books have joined my permanent collection. (Not an easy hurdle to pass, given that space is at a premium right now.) They have a lot of re-read value, and they always pick up my mood with their humor and animal antics.
I've previously covered the first three books in the series:
Now I'm catching up on the two most recent. Fish You Were Here came out last summer, while Raining Cats and Detectives is new this month.
Fish You Were Here begins with the very confused pet shop owner, Mr. Venezi, trying to hire an assistant. Amongst his missteps, he somehow manages to hire Viola, who seems like the perfect choice. She actually knows what all the animals want most. Unfortunately, that makes Mr. V feel unwanted, so tension arises.
The character interaction is what makes this series so charming. Sasspants, the guinea pig, walks the line between suspicious and insightful in her observations ' that's what makes her the great detective. Hamisher's more ebullient passion for art and imagination provides lots of funny lines and silly ideas that are quite entertaining. The fish are nearly mindless in their groupthink but good-hearted, even if they can't even remember their own names. It's all drawn with plenty of expression while keeping the fuzzy creatures cute. Oh, and the fish are cute, too.
In their quest to find Mr. V, the detective duo leaves the pet shop, showing off some of their clever inventions and also visiting with the mice neighbors. It all works out ok, with Viola learning to balance work ethic and watching TV on her laptop, once the pets teach her a lesson, and Mr. V learns that everyone's needed to be part of the big store family.
This is so much a world I want to be part of, from the wide-ranging friendships and cozy community of the animals to the charming neighborhood shops. The opening page of Fish You Were Here shows a diverse group of applicants hanging outside the pet shop, in a row with a bookstore and a bakery and ice cream store. What a lovely area to envision!
Raining Cats and Detectives tackles the difficult question of what happens when some of the pets are bought and have to leave the store. We also meet Tummytickles, the sleepy bookstore cat. The owner, Charlotte, and her niece, Bree, visit as well.
The gags fly fast and furious, with all kinds of creative combinations surprising me. Hamisher's trying to make case files for their new detective office, and his portraits are great. Then comes a new owner for Sasspants, a real-life detective. The other animals try to cope with her absence, while she meets the other inhabitants of her new home ' including some really smart fish! It's silly fun how the other animals think that you become a detective when you put on the right hat. Makes for some charming visuals, though, with even the fish in fedoras. The overall problem, of not wanting any of the animals to actually leave, is even solved in a clever way.

There is a lot of sturm und drang out there in the worlds of social media, finacial media, and just plain media about all the lockups coming off and all the insider selling going on in some big internet stocks. As someone who has played this game a few times, I tought I'd post some thoughts about this.
First and foremost, this post has nothing to do with what USV has done, might do, or is thinking about doing with specific stocks we might own or not. That's a disclaimer for those who aren't familiar with one.
When a venture backed company goes public and is worth billions (or even hundreds of millions), the investors who provided the early capital to that company are going to be sitting on a lot of stock. They can easily own 15-20% or more of these companies. But even if they own less than 10% (as Accel Partners does in Facebook), they can be looking at billions of dollars of value.
It is an investors job to return capital. I will say that again. It is an investors job to return capital. That is how we are measured. Paper gains are fine. But at the end of the day, an investor will be measured by the amount of cash or liquid stock they return divided by the amount of cash that was invested in their fund. A multiple of three is good for a venture capital fund. A multiple of five is great. A multiple of ten is once a decade.
When an investor is looking at a single holding being worth three, five, or possibly ten times their entire fund, you can be sure they are looking to lock in that gain. That's a recipe for fantastic performance and the downside of not locking that in is a lot bigger than the upside of another one or two times their fund size.
And then there's the question of whether venture capital firms are good public market investors and whether they should be managing/holding public stocks. I don't have any hard data here, but my anecdotal data says that we are terrible public market investors. That is why many VC firms have a policy of moving the public stocks out of their portfolios as quickly as they can.
I think that is a good policy. Venture capital is about capturing the value between the startup phase and the public company phase. Others should be focused on capturing the value post the public offering.
So let's go back to the expiration of lockups and the waves of insider selling that result. This is to be expected and in fact is expected by the public markets. Look at all of the short positions that get built up in the locked up newly minted public companies in the weeks before the lockups come off. Investors know that a ton of stock is going to hit the markets and they make bets that it will impact the stock price and in most cases it does impact the stock price. As JLM likes to say "this generation did not invent sex." This has been going on since I got into the venture capital business in the mid 80s and I expect its been going on for a lot longer than that.
So to all the folks out there who are shocked and outraged at all the insider selling going on, I would suggest they park their outrage at the door of capitalism. White House rivals President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney condemned Monday a Republican lawmaker's shock claim that women can prevent pregnancy during rape, sparking an abortion debate likely to impact the election campaign.
But while Romney scrambled to distance his campaign from his party ally's statement, Obama seized on the gaffe to embarrass his opponent and underline the gap between their positions.
Congressman Todd Akin, his party's nominee for the Senate race in Missouri, triggered outrage Sunday when he said a woman's body can block an unwanted pregnancy during what he termed a "legitimate rape."
Akin's claim, which is unsupported by science, has been used in the past by some Christian conservatives to justify their opposition to abortion, even those in cases of rape.
But even as Akin defiantly refused to bow out Monday, the walls were rapidly closing in on the congressman, with the Republican Party reportedly shutting off funding for him and flagbearer Romney quick to condemn the remarks.
Several other high-ranking party figures, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, fearful of seeing the Republican plan to woo women and independent voters away from Democrats derailed, also waded in.
Obama acknowledged Romney had distanced himself, but nevertheless found a way to twist the knife during an appearance at the White House briefing room, telling reporters: "First of all, the views expressed were offensive.
"Rape is rape, and the idea we should be parsing... what types of rape we are talking about doesn't make sense to the American people," he said, quickly turning to the broader issue of abortion rights.
"What I think that these comments do underscore is why we should not have a bunch of politicians, a majority of whom are men, making health care decisions on behalf of women," Obama said.
Akin's remark angered Romney.
"Congressman Akin's comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong," Romney told the conservative National Review Online. "Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive."
In his comments, Akin had appeared to suggest that some women falsely allege rape in order to justify abortion. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," he said.
Romney dismissed this claim and said: "I have an entirely different view. What he said is entirely without merit and he should correct it."
Amid a growing backlash, Akin apologized, saying on the Mike Huckabee Show, a syndicated radio program, that he used "absolutely the wrong word" and that his comments were "a very, very serious error."
But he also suggested he was not going to stand down in his race against incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill.
"I'm not a quitter. My belief is we're going to take this thing forward, and by the grace of God, to win this race," Akin said.
While he said no one from the Romney campaign had called him to demand he stand down, several Republicans publicly urged Akin to pull out, including Senator Scott Brown, from Massachusetts where Romney was once governor.
"Not only should he apologize, but I believe Representative Akin's statement was so far out of bounds that he should resign the nomination for US Senate."
Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus gave voice to what many Republicans were undoubtedly thinking.
"If it was me I would do the right thing and step aside," Priebus told Missouri's KMOX radio.
Akin's remarks also have been seized upon by Democrats, including McCaskill, who was fundraising on Akin's remarks.
"For most Missourians I hope this is one of those gut check moments when they realize this is not somebody we want speaking for us and for our values on the floor of the United States Senate," she told MSNBC news.
Despite his condemnation of Akin's outburst, and his pro-choice position during his time as Massachusetts governor, Romney is campaigning on an anti-abortion ticket.
He wants the US Supreme Court, whose members are appointed by the president, to overturn "Roe V. Wade", the landmark 1973 ruling that upholds the legality of abortion.
Romney's vice-presidential running mate, congressman Paul Ryan, partnered with Akin in 2009 to co-sponsor a "personhood bill" which declared a fertilized egg is entitled to the same legal rights as a person, and would have essentially outlawed abortion even in the case of rape or incest.
"I'm as pro-life as a person gets," Ryan told the conservative Weekly Standard magazine in 2010.

Unless he questions you when you hang out with your mates, i do not think it is appropriate in your part to do the same thing. There is always a stage (mostly) where a guy will spend more time with another girl if she shows him more interest or gives him more attention than you do. This could develop into a fling or it could just die off if you gave him more face time.
If he brings her up a lot or try hard to meet up or spend time with her then it could be for the reason i just mentioned, you should try and give him more attention and hope that he has not done anything to ruin your relationship.
Also, do you trust him enough to leave him with this Emma girl while your at Uni? The more i think about it, the more it seems like your the only one at this stage who cares about the direction this whole thing is heading. You could simply ask him if he has done anything and make it clear to him that you do not give second chances. His reaction to that should really give you an idea of what to do next.

Tony Scott, director of "Top Gun," "Days of Thunder" and "Crimson Tide," had inoperable brain cancer, a source close to him told ABC News.
The famed director died Sunday after jumping from a bridge in Los Angeles, authorities said.
Police said they received a 911 call at about 12:30 p.m. that an individual had jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge. The body was recovered around 3 p.m., when it was identified by authorities as Scott, according to Lt. Joseph Bale of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed today.
The Coroner's Office found several notes to loved ones in Scott's car, a spokesman told The Associated Press. A suicide note was later found at his office, according to the AP.
"I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time," Scott's spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement, according to the AP.
Scott, 68, was perhaps best known for directing "Top Gun," starring Tom Cruise in 1986, which went on to gross more than $300 million worldwide, according to IMDB.com. The duo worked again in the 1990 film "Days of Thunder."
The British-born director also frequently worked with Denzel Washington, most recently in the 2010 film "Unstoppable." They collaborated on four other films: "Crimson Tide," "Man on Fire," "Deja Vu" and "The Taking of Pelham 123."
Scott was the younger brother of producer and director Ridley Scott. Together, the brothers formed their own production company, Scott Free Productions. Their company produced the CBS dramas "NUMB3RS" and "The Good Wife."The 2012 blockbuster "Prometheus" was the latest film released by their production company.
Other Tony Scott films include "True Romance," written by Quentin Tarantino, "The Fan," with Robert De Niro, and "Enemy of the State," starring Will Smith.
In a tweet Sunday, director Ron Howard said, "No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day."
"Most of the obits for Tony Scott will mention "Top Gun" first, but my favorite will always be "True Romance." RIP," tweeted film critic Richard Roeper.
Scott was survived by his wife, Donna, and their twin sons.

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) ? Growing up quickly after his father's unexpected death, a young Paul Ryan found direction for his life at Ohio's Miami University. His interest in politics and economics ? Republican and conservative ? thrived during his four years on the small-town campus.
Thought of as a smart and serious student but also friendly and outgoing, Ryan was part of the college's influential Greek community as a Delta Tau Delta. He ventured into elective politics as a low-level volunteer for the congressional campaign of state legislator John Boehner, now the U.S. House speaker.
The young Ryan, Class of 1992, honed a conservative bent with the help of an enthusiastic professor who served as mentor and sounding board in hourslong sessions on politics. He also studied economic thinkers such as Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman and others who believed in individuals and market forces over government solutions.
"The core beliefs were already there," Miami professor Rich Hart said Tuesday of his former pupil. "I think he was just honing them with his studies, strengthening his belief in empowering individuals. ... It all kind of gravitated back to what the role of government was in society."
Ryan was scheduled to lead a rally Wednesday at Miami's campus in Oxford, about 40 miles north of Cincinnati. When he was a freshman, in 1988, Miami was growing in popularity as a leading academic-bang-for-the-buck public university dubbed by one author as among "The Public Ivys."
Lisa Rippe, from Ryan's Janesville, Wis., hometown and high school, said Ryan had asked her how she liked Miami; she gave him positive reviews, and he soon was part of her carpool for the six- to seven-hour drive to southwest Ohio.
The liberal arts school of 14,000 students prided itself on its teachers and the kind of personal availability that Ryan found with Hart, who Ryan has said challenged him and set him on "a vision quest" to improve the nation's economics.
Hart had Ryan, an economics/political science double major, in a junior-level macroeconomics class designed to be a "weeder" ? loaded with analytics and math, it wasn't meant to help grade-point averages.
Ryan had little trouble mastering the work, Hart said, and he stood out with an intellectual curiosity that brought him frequently to Hart's office to talk things out. They dissected what they saw as flaws in Keynesian economics and government approaches, and traded thoughts on writings such F.A. Hayek's 1944 warning against state control, "The Road to Serfdom," and Rand's "Atlas Shrugged," about creative and productive individuals rebelling against increasing government control and taxation.
Hart doesn't remember Ryan ever discussing plans to run for office, but he said he wasn't surprised when Ryan asked for a recommendation for an internship in the office of Sen. Bob Kasten, R-Wis., which Ryan landed, or when Ryan went to work after college for New York congressman Jack Kemp. Hart considered Kemp, with his optimism and font of conservative ideas, a natural political mentor for Ryan.
Ryan had joined the College Republicans and took on tasks such as putting up yard signs and knocking on doors for Boehner, who would win election in Republican-dominated Butler County in 1990 to the seat he still holds today.
Miami's political connections go back to President Benjamin Harrison, Class of 1852. Vice President George H.W. Bush campaigned on the Miami campus in 1988, Ryan's freshman year, and the campus was among the settings for George Clooney's 2011 presidential politics thriller "The Ides of March."
Ryan stayed in the Anderson Hall dormitory his freshman year, then moved to the Delta Tau Delta house. Several Greek houses were founded at Miami, and about a third of its undergraduates are in fraternities or sororities.
A younger fraternity brother recalls Ryan participating in fraternity parties, but not to excess.
"He was a pretty conservative guy, and with a very good sense of humor," said Michal Loisel. "He liked to engage in conversation, and with a little more depth than the 'Where did you go last night?' and 'How much did you drink?'"
Loisel, now an assistant prosecutor in Lucas County, Ohio, remembers Ryan as not engaging in the heavy-handed hazing of pledges. "He was one of the guys you could talk to. He wouldn't belittle you," Loisel said.
By his senior year, Ryan was obviously very popular, said Tom Hall, an economics professor who had him in a class on business cycles.
"There's always some senioritis in the last semester, but he was glad to be there. He had a good attitude about learning," Hall said. "His fellow students liked him a lot. That came across. ... When you are a teacher, you can tell who the other students like."
Hall added, "I just remember thinking this guy would do well in whatever he does."
Ryan was his alma mater's commencement speaker three years ago. He reflected then upon the importance of his time amid Miami's red-brick Georgian buildings after his father's death from a heart attack in 1986.
"I came to Oxford after a very difficult high school experience in which I lost my father," Ryan said. "It was here at Miami where I was able to find myself. I found a sense of direction, and a sense of identity."

Now that Miss F has come along, we find ourselves spending much less quality time together. Many days I hand her off to him and work on house work I couldn't get done with her, or space out if it's been a rough day.
The one exception has been Wednesdays. On Wednesdays, we walk to the local library, then to the farmers' market. It's a nice time, but the farmers' market isn't open year round, and at some point it'll be too cold to walk. To complicate things, I plan on going back to my part time job in a couple of weeks, and *B* starts school again soon. So one evening a week is really going to be the most we get together.
My mom took Miss F for the night on Friday, and *B* and I got to have that quality time once again.? It was amazingly refreshing.? It really helped us solidify the fact that we need to be purposeful in our time together.? While Miss F is too young for family board games, we can try to come up with things that the three of us can do together.? For a little while during *B*'s paternity leave, I would listen to him read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to Miss F.? That might be our FHE until we can come up with a new plan for FHE with a wee one.

Mitt Romney's campaign is expanding its ad buy for a commercial questioning President Obama's character over a super-PAC video linking the GOP presidential candidate to the death of a woman from cancer.

Heathrow built a temporary Olympics terminal with 31 check-in desks to accommodate departing athletes and support staff. The terminal was decorated like a park, and some staff wore bearskin hats in the style of Buckingham Palace guards.
"I have to say to Britain, you guys did a great job," said passenger Tumua Anae, a 23-year-old Californian who won gold as part of the U.S. water polo team.
London's quirky mayor, Boris Johnson, gloated to reporters, saying London had defied the skeptics. Some 300,000 foreigners and 5.5 million day-trippers flocked to the city for the games. Hotel occupancy was at 84 percent ? double what Beijing and Sydney saw during their Olympics.
Johnson said the city's public transport had coped just fine. Use of London's subway ? the Tube ? was up 30 percent but saw few major problems. London's overground commuter train saw double the normal crowds, and the city's bike hire scheme broke a record with 46,000 bikes rented on a single day.
Traffic actually became heavier on Monday as motorists who had stayed away to avoid Olympic crowds returned to the streets. Taxi drivers breathed a sigh of relief after having complained of fewer customers and being barred from using special Olympic road lanes.

In central London, workers using fork lifts, cherry pickers and small cranes began clearing a temporary 15,000-seat arena ? and scooping up 5,000 tons of sand ? from the site of the beach volleyball competition in Horseguards Parade, a storied square in the heart of London's Westminster political district.
A total of 17 Olympic venues around the country will eventually be dismantled. But some will remain for the upcoming Paralympics, which run from Aug. 29 to Sept. 9.
The Olympic Park, visited by more than 5 million people during the games, will be closed to the public until the Paralympics, and many venues will see changes to make them more accessible to the disabled before those games begin. Some 7,000 police officers and 5,000 G4S workers will be on hand to guard the Paralympics.

Researchers from A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) have developed an innovative method for creating sharp, full-spectrum colour images at 100,000 dots per inch (dpi), using metal-laced nanometer-sized structures, without the need for inks or dyes. In comparison, current industrial printers such as inkjet and laserjet printers can only achieve up to 10,000 dpi while research grade methods are able to dispense dyes for only single colour images.
This novel breakthrough allows colouring to be treated not as an inking matter but as a lithographic matter, which can potentially revolutionise the way images are printed and be further developed for use in high-resolution reflective colour displays as well as high density optical data storage.
The inspiration for the research was derived from stained glass, which is traditionally made by mixing tiny fragments of metal into the glass. It was found that nanoparticles from these metal fragments scattered light passing through the glass to give stained glass its colours. Using a similar concept with the help of modern nanotechnology tools, the researchers precisely patterned metal nanostructures, and designed the surface to reflect the light to achieve the colour images.
"The resolution of printed colour images very much depends on the size and spacing between individual 'nanodots' of colour," explained Dr Karthik Kumar, one of the key researchers involved. "The closer the dots are together and because of their small size, the higher the resolution of the image. With the ability to accurately position these extremely small colour dots, we were able to demonstrate the highest theoretical print colour resolution of 100,000 dpi."
"Instead of using different dyes for different colours, we encoded colour information into the size and position of tiny metal disks. These disks then interacted with light through the phenomenon of plasmon resonances," said Dr Joel Yang, the project leader of the research. "The team built a database of colour that corresponded to a specific nanostructure pattern, size and spacing. These nanostructures were then positioned accordingly. Similar to a child's 'colouring-by-numbers' image, the sizes and positions of these nanostructures defined the 'numbers'. But instead of sequentially colouring each area with a different ink, an ultrathin and uniform metal film was deposited across the entire image causing the 'encoded' colours to appear all at once, almost like magic!" added Dr Joel Yang.
The researchers from IMRE had also collaborated with A*STAR's Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) to design the pattern using computer simulation and modelling. Dr Ravi Hegde of IHPC said, "The computer simulations were vital in understanding how the structures gave rise to such rich colours. This knowledge is currently being used to predict the behaviour of more complicated nanostructure arrays."
The researchers are currently working with Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), A*STAR's technology transfer arm, to engage potential collaborators and to explore licensing the technology. The research was published online on August 12, 2012 in Nature Nanotechnology.

Nasa's new Mars rover has returned its first 360-degree colour panorama from the surface of the Red Planet.
The Curiosity robot used its wideangle science camera placed high up on a mast to acquire the frames.
The low-resolution vista shows at centre the big mountain that lies in the middle of Gale Crater, the deep depression in which the rover landed.
Curiosity's ultimate goal is to drive towards this peak - informally known as Mount Sharp - to study its rocks.
Evidence from satellite photos has suggested there are sediments exposed at the base of the mountain that were laid down in the presence of abundant water.
The rover will use its science instruments to try to understand what kind of environments existed at the time of the rocks' formation, and whether there were periods in Mars history when any type of microbial life could have thrived.
