New Year, New Love: Resolutions for Relationships in 2013 ...

December 28, 2012 ? 7:09 pm

by Sabrina Cohen

New Year?s Eve symbolizes many things?new beginnings, new goals, and my personal favorite?making out with a complete stranger at midnight. As you reflect on all the dating you?ve done this year, consider the following MeetMoi resolutions to get you one step closer to love in 2013.

1- Let go ? Some of us try to swim the sea of love tugging the weight of a heavy heart behind us. The stories we create about ourselves and others are enough to keep us anchored in solitude for all eternity. Break the chain by consciously wiping the slate clean before each and every date.

2- Open up ? If you?re lucky enough to find even a hint of love, be open. It can be scary, but not as scary as letting it pass you by. No one?s ever experienced the wonder of love without being vulnerable. It?s a risk worth taking.

3- Date with integrity ? Even without the universe keeping karmic tabs, it?s in your best interest to treat each interaction with respect, honesty, compassion, and completion. If you?ve made a mess with anyone in your dating past, clean it up.

4- Try something new ? Date against type. Try activities and approaches you?ve never considered before. Stretching your comfort zone is a great way to explore new territory out in the dating world and within yourself. What you find may surprise you.

5- Keep the faith ? Above all else, believe. Believe it?s possible. Believe you deserve it. Believe you?ll find it. And until you do, repeat resolutions 1-4 and have fun!

How will you resolve to date differently in 2013? Share your thoughts below!

Time runs short to avert longshoremen's strike

NEW YORK (AP) ? In just a few days, a walkout by thousands of dock workers could bring commerce to a near standstill at every major port from Boston to Houston, potentially delivering a big blow to retailers and manufacturers still struggling to find their footing in a weak economy.

More than 14,000 longshoremen are threating to go on strike Sunday ? a wide-ranging work stoppage that would immediately close cargo ports on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico to container ships.

The 15 ports involved in the labor dispute move more than 100 million tons of goods each year, or about 40 percent of the nation's containerized cargo traffic. Losing them to a shutdown, even for a few days, could cost the economy billions of dollars.

"If the port shuts down, nothing moves in or out," said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation. And when the workers do return, "it's going to take time to clear out that backlog, and we don't know how long that it's going to take."

Shipments of such varied products as flat-screen TVs, sneakers and snow shovels would either sit idle at sea or get rerouted, at great time and expense. U.S. factories also rely on container ships for parts and raw materials, meaning supply lines for all sorts of products could be squeezed.

Joseph Ahlstrom, a professor at the State University of New York's Maritime College and a former cargo ship captain, called container ships the "lifeblood of the country."

"We don't fly in a lot of products. It's just too expensive," Ahlstrom said. "The bulk of the products we import come in inside containers."

The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, a group representing shipping lines, terminal operators and port associations, expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once already, for 90 days, but they have so far balked at extending it again when it expires at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

The union said its members would agree to an extension only if the Maritime Alliance dropped a proposal to freeze the royalties workers get for every container they unload. The Alliance has argued that the longshoremen, who it said earn an average $124,138 per year in wages and benefits, are compensated well enough already.

Federal mediators have been trying to push negotiations along, but there has been no word from either side on the progress of the talks since Dec. 24. As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, said the talks weren't going well and that a strike was expected.

The work stoppage would not be absolute. Longshoremen would continue to handle military cargo, mail, passenger ships, non-containerized items like automobiles, and perishable commodities, like fresh food.

Yet the economic damage could still be severe.

"The global economy moves by water, and shutting down container ports along the East and Gulf coasts while the national economy remains fragile benefits no one," Deborah Hadden, acting port director at Massport, the public agency that oversees shipping terminals in Boston. It is not a part of the contract dispute.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said "the livelihood of thousands of Florida families lies in the balance."

The White House weighed in, too, urging dockworkers and shipping companies Thursday to reach agreement "as quickly as possible" on a contract extension. Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich said the administration is monitoring the situation closely.

If it happens, the walkout could be the biggest national port disruption since 2002, when unionized dockworkers were locked out of 29 West Coast ports for 10 days because of a contract dispute.

The ports only reopened after President George W. Bush, invoking powers given to him by the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, ordered an 80-day cooling-off period. Some economists estimated that each day of that lockout cost the U.S. economy $1 billion. It took months for the retail supply chain to fully recover.

An East Coast port freeze would have its biggest impact at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where 3,250 longshoremen handled 32.3 million tons of cargo in 2010. The authority is not a party to the contract dispute.

Other major ports affected would include Savannah, Ga., which handled 18 million tons, and Houston and Hampton Roads, Va., which each handled more than 12.5 million tons.

Thousands of other jobs would be directly affected by the shutdown. Truck drivers might not have any cargo to transport, tug boat captains no ships to guide and freight train operators nothing to haul.

Simultaneously, another labor dispute involving dock workers was playing out on the West Coast.

Longshoremen at several Pacific Northwest grain terminals worked Thursday under contract terms they soundly rejected last weekend. The owners implemented the terms after declaring talks at an impasse. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has yet to announce its next move.

Workplace rules, not salary and benefits, have been the obstacle to a new deal.

The dispute involves terminals in Portland, Ore., Vancouver, Wash., and Seattle, where longshoremen have been working without an agreement since the last contract expired Sept. 30.

Tips For Successful Real Estate Investments - Maynas Eric

You can safely invest in real estate in a lot of safe ways, but there are various incorrect ways too. This article contains important tips that may prevent you from buying a home above its value or from losing money.

There has never been a better time to start investing in real estate. Property values at this time are lower than they have been in decades. This presents a unique and ideal window of opportunity to move out of an apartment and into a place of your own. Since the prices will eventually go up again, if you purchase now, you are sure to make your investment profitable.

Before you begin thinking about purchasing real estate, get organized. Keep a notebook of information that you collect from your agent, friends, and from online or printed sources. This way, everything is stored neatly in once place and is readily available when the situation calls for it.

TIP! If you plan to purchase all or some of a building for opening a business, be sure it is in a good neighborhood with ample growth opportunities. You could be making a bad business choice if you decide to open your business in a less than ideal neighborhood.

Real Estate

Real estate agents should keep in contact with former clients over the holidays and on the anniversaries of their home-buying. This will remind people of how helpful you have been to them during their real estate experience. When you sign a card or letter, or even on a phone call, remind them about how you work based on referrals, and would love it if they recommended your business to their friends.

Do not be afraid to buy your dream house! Some investors say that it isn?t a good time for buying or selling larger houses, but some disagree. You might want to buy your dream home now, housing prices will probably go up from here.

TIP! Do not let the price of a house you are interested in be influenced by the fact it has a view. It is somewhat common for people to pay far more than market value for a home that appeals to them, but they can not sell it for what they paid.

When you are committing to buying a property, be patient and realistic about all the opportunities you have available. The right property for you may not come around for awhile.

If you have already been approved for a loan, it may entice sellers a little more. If you wait to get your approval letter, it will increase the length of time it takes to actually purchase the house, and could prove to be more expensive.

Look for parking areas near the home you are considering buying. If there is no driveway, you will have to look for a parking spot on a daily basis. This could quickly become frustrating, or expensive if you have to purchase a parking permit.

TIP! If you are able to pay a 20 percent down payment, you can avoid the monthly expense of private mortgage insurance. Otherwise you may have to end up paying PMI, which is private mortgage insurance.

Real Estate

Be sure that any appraiser you are planning on hiring has had several years of experience in real estate. If your real estate agency recommends an appraiser to you, find someone else. There might be a conflict of interest there. Ensure that your appraiser is properly licensed and certified.

If you live somewhere where you do not need it, do not buy a house with a fireplace anywhere but the living room. It can be aggravating to clean a bunch of fireplaces, especially if they?re rarely used.

TIP! Do your homework and research rental properties. Rental properties should always have their records examined for two years prior, at the very least.

Try and be moderate in your negotiations in regards to real estate. A lot of people adopt an aggressive attitude in the hope that the other party will cave. This is not the best way to proceed. Firmly establish the basic deal you will accept, but let professionals take care of the details. Your lawyer and the Realtor or experienced in these things, and will probably negotiate a better deal than you could.

Real Estate Decisions

If you are doing things improperly, odds are you will make bad real estate decisions that could wind up costing you a lot of money. The advice below can help you to make confident real estate decisions. The next thing you must do is capitalize.

TIP! If you have a friend who knows about real estate, bring him or her with you when you visit the house. This person can be very helpful in noticing issues in the house that you missed.

Best videos of 2012: Experience a trip into a wormhole

Joanna Carver, reporter

This wild wormhole ride comes in at number 7 in our best videos of 2012 countdown.

Pondering what the trip of a lifetime would be? This animation by Andrew Hamilton from the University of Colorado at Boulder shows what the eye-boggling journey through a wormhole would look like.

First, you fall into the event horizon of a black hole. Once inside, you'll see the entire history of the universe in a flash of radiation. People would be vaporised by this point, so you'll have to be superhuman to make your way back out. You emerge from the black hole and tumble into a wormhole, where the flow of space around you reverses and you head back the way you came. Finally, you find yourself in a white hole - a time-reversed black hole - and speed forward faster than light.

Another radiation flash shows you the entire future of the universe, then another shows you the entire past of the new universe you're now entering. The animation then lets you turn around and see the universe you've just left.

For more about the visualisation, check out the original post: "What a trip through a wormhole would look like". You may also like to read our related feature, "Intergalactic subway: All aboard the wormhole express" or experience Hamilton's animation of a trip through a black hole.

(AP) ? Television audiences across China watched an anarchist antihero rebel against a totalitarian government and persuade the people to rule themselves. Soon the Internet was crackling with quotes of "V for Vendetta's" famous line: "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people."

The airing of the movie Friday night on China Central Television stunned viewers and raised hopes that China is loosening censorship.

"V for Vendetta" never appeared in Chinese theaters, but it is unclear whether it was ever banned. An article on the Communist Party's People's Daily website says it was previously prohibited from broadcast, but the spokesman for the agency that approves movies said he was not aware of any ban.

Some commentators and bloggers think the broadcast could be CCTV producers pushing the envelope of censorship, or another sign that the ruling Communist Party's newly installed leader, Xi Jinping, is serious about reform.

"Oh God, CCTV unexpectedly put out 'V for Vendetta.' I had always believed that film was banned in China!" media commentator Shen Chen wrote on the popular Twitter-like Sina Weibo service, where he has over 350,000 followers.

Zhang Ming, a supervisor at a real estate company, asked on Weibo: "For the first time CCTV-6 aired 'V for Vendetta,' what to think, is the reform being deepened?"

The 2005 movie, based on a comic book, is set in an imagined future Britain with a fascist government. The protagonist wears a mask of Guy Fawkes, the 17th-century English rebel who tried to blow up Parliament. The mask has become a revolutionary symbol for young protesters in mostly Western countries, and it also has a cult-like status in China as pirated DVDs are widely available. Some people have used the image of the mask as their profile pictures on Chinese social media sites.

Beijing-based rights activist Hu Jia wrote on Twitter, which is not accessible to most Chinese because of government Internet controls: "This great film couldn't be any more appropriate for our current situation. Dictators, prisons, secret police, media control, riots, getting rid of 'heretics' ... fear, evasion, challenging lies, overcoming fear, resistance, overthrowing tyranny ... China's dictators and its citizens also have this relationship."

China's authoritarian government strictly controls print media, television and radio. Censors also monitor social media sites including Weibo. Programs have to be approved by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, but people with knowledge of the industry say CCTV, the only company with a nationwide broadcast license, is entitled to make its own censorship decisions when showing a foreign movie.

"It is already broadcast. It is no big deal," said a woman who answered the phone at movie channel CCTV-6. "We also didn't anticipate such a big reaction."

The woman, who only gave her surname, Yang, said she would pass on questions to her supervisor, which weren't answered.

The spokesman for the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television said he had noticed the online reaction to the broadcast. "I've not heard of any ban on this movie," Wu Baoan said Thursday.

The film is available on video-on-demand platforms in China, where movie content also needs to be approved by authorities.

A political scientist at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences who used to work for CCTV said the film might have approval, or it could have been CCTV's own decision to broadcast it.

"Every media outlet knows there is a ceiling above their head," said Liu Shanying. "Sometimes we will work under the ceiling and avoid touching it. But sometimes we have a few brave ones who want to reach that ceiling and even express their discontent over the censor system.

"It is very possible that CCTV decided by itself" to broadcast the film, Liu said. If so, he added, it would have been "due to a gut feeling that China's film censorship will be loosened or reformed."

"V for Vendetta" was released in the United States in 2005 and around the world in 2006. China has a yearly quota on the numbers of foreign movies that can be imported on a revenue share basis, making it tough to get distribution approval. Other movies that failed to reach Chinese screens in 2006 include "Brokeback Mountain" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." Chinese moviegoers that year were able to see "Mission: Impossible III" with Tom Cruise and "The Painted Veil," which was filmed in China and set in a Chinese village.

Warner Brothers, which produced and distributed "V for Vendetta," declined to comment.

China doesn't have a classification system, so all movies shown at its cinemas are open to adults and children of any age. A filmmaker and Beijing Film Academy professor, Xie Fei, published an open letter on Sina Weibo on Saturday calling for authorities to replace the movie censorship system that dates from the 1950s with a ratings system.

The airing of "V for Vendetta" raised some hopes about possible changes under Xi, who was publicly named China's new leader last month. He has already announced a trimmed-down style of leadership, calling on officials to reduce waste and unnecessary meetings and pomp. His reforms are aimed at pleasing a public long frustrated by local corruption.

State media say they have reduced reports on officials' trips as part of this drive. The official Xinhua News Agency warned this week that media outlets should "learn to play professionally in today's information age as an increasingly picky audience is constantly" putting them under scrutiny.

An American business consultant and author with high-level Chinese contacts said there is no less commitment to one-party rule in China, so any media reforms will only go so far.

"You can't have a totally free media as we would have in the West and still maintain the integrity of a one-party system," said Robert Lawrence Kuhn, who wrote the book "How China's Leaders Think." He said he thinks restrictions are being eased, "but it has to be limited."

The new leadership has to tread carefully, Kuhn said, because in the age of the Internet, talk about reforms won't be forgotten.

"High expectations, if they are not fulfilled, will create a worse situation," he said.

$500 million in checks left at Jerusalem holy site

(AP) ? Worshippers usually leave notes to the Almighty at one of Judaism's holiest sites. But half a billion dollars?

Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, who oversees Jerusalem's Western Wall, said a worshipper found an envelope at the site Wednesday with 507 checks in the amount of about $1 million each. They were not addressed to anyone, and it's doubtful they can be cashed.

Rabinovitch said most are Nigerian. Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said some were from the United States, Europe and Asia.

Rabinovitch says he has found similar checks in Western Wall charity boxes before, but they all bounced. He says most of them were written by people from Africa.

The rabbi says he thinks the check writers "wanted to give all they had to the Creator of the universe."

(IBD) Great Scott! Racist Sexist Indian-American Female GOP Gov Picks An African-American Senator

Congress: The first black Republican senator in three decades will be? a spokesman for Tea Party conservatism and a proud member of the party that was? founded to fight slavery and made the civil rights revolution possible.

Though he'll inevitably be dismissed as a "token" or worse, Rep. Tim Scott,? the next Republican senator from the former slave state of South Carolina, and? the first black GOP senator since Edward Brooke of Massachusetts, shatters once? again the stereotype of the GOP as a party of racists and sexists.

Appointed by an Indian-American female, Gov. Nikki Haley, to replace outgoing? Republican and Tea Party favorite Sen. Jim DeMint, Scott got the chance to be? the first black congressional Republican since 2003 ? when J.C. Watts of? Oklahoma left Congress ? by beating the son of Strom Thurmond, South Carolina's? legendary politician, in the 2010 GOP primary.

The elder Thurmond was the nominee of the genuinely racist Dixiecrat Party,? which split off from the Democrats in 1948. The symbolism of Scott holding Strom? Thurmond's seat in the U.S. Senate, after beating Thurmond's son in his first? U.S. House race, should not be lost on anyone.

Scott joins Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, Nevada? Gov. Brian Sandoval, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Texas Sen.-elect Ted Cruz? as another high-profile exception to the media portrayal of the Republican Party? as a collection of Paleolithic white males so hostile to women and minorities? that they opposed Susan Rice as secretary of state even though they'd put forth? Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell as her predecessors.

New video emerges claiming Cain Velasquez tore his ACL prior to knockout loss against Junior dos Santos

Is it time to put the past behind us ... or revisit it? That depends on your take of the first meeting between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez, who will do it again in less than two weeks with the UFC heavyweight title up for grabs.

Well, the timing here is certainly ... coincidental.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez will try to reclaim his crown when he locks horns with Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 155, which is scheduled for Dec. 29, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What happened the first time he went toe-to-toe with "Cigano?"

He got knocked out in 64 seconds. Following the loss, the first of his career, Velasquez was critical of his performance and promised a better showing if -- and when -- he got the opportunity to get his belt back. But what's going to be different the second time around?

Well, for one thing, he won't have a torn ACL.

That's the message from this recently-released video from longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) filmmaker Bobby Razak, who alleges the devastating knee injury happened just 14 days before their showdown on the promotion's inaugural FOX broadcast.

But Velasquez wasn't the only one fighting on one leg.

Dos Santos tore his meniscus prior to fight night. In fact, his first order of business following his championship win was to undergo surgery to have it repaired (see the pic here). That means both men fought with one good stick and not surprisingly, the advantage went to the striker.

But who will have the advantage in their "Sin City" rematch?

Alright Maniacs. let's get some feedback on this video (courtesy of Middle Easy). Does anyone have a problem with the timing of its release, considering it's been over a year since the injury occurred? And do you think anything changes if both fighters are 100 percent?

More on "Dos Santos vs. Velasquez 2" right here.

PFT: Skins up, Giants down in playoff hunt

San Francisco 49ers v New England PatriotsGetty Images

Benching a quarterback who rarely turned the ball over and usually won was a tough call.

And at times during the 49ers? 41-34 win over the Patriots, it looked like it was going to backfire.

But for all the discussion about the transition from veteran Alex Smith to Colin Kaepernick under center, the man taking snaps almost doesn?t matter with the way the 49ers play defense.

The league?s top-ranked defense bludgeoned the league?s top-ranked offense for the first 35 minutes or so, making the Patriots look like they were the ones on the road in adverse conditions. They pressured Tom Brady. They forced turnovers. They made Wes Welker disappear.

That?s not defense. That?s magic.

The Patriots entered the game averaging 36.3 points and 425.7 yards per game, and they showed why while erasing a four-touchdown deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

But the 49ers showed some resilience, taking that shot and answering, stopping Tom Brady at a point where it almost seemed fated to become another chapter in his legacy.

The shots they were doling out all night had a cumulative toll on the Patriots, who looked gassed at the end. The 49ers improved to 10-3-1 and clinched a playoff berth, and they proved they can come up with a stop, which will be helpful when they?re playing people not named Tom Brady.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

1. Kaepernick does some amazing things. That?s why 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh made the change.

But he might also do things that shorten the season.

Like many young quarterbacks, he will lock onto his first read, and he will throw interceptions. That?s fine, when he?s playing with a lead. But at some point in the next month (actually next week), he?ll see defenses which make him pay for it more than occasionally.

And Frank Gore?s not always going to be there to pick up his fumbled snaps and carry them for touchdowns. He needs to play a cleaner game if the 49ers want to make good this potential.

Kaepernick can make big plays, but there were some troubling signs in the midst of the win.

2. Take away the simple fact the 49ers changed quarterbacks in mid-stream.?They are a nightmare to prepare for because of the way they?re constantly changing personnel.

From the modified pistol formation they which caters to Kaepernick?s skills to empty backfields to traditional two-tight end, one-back sets, they present a constant challenge.

It?s hard to match up when you don?t know where people are going to be, and having tight ends as varied as Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker makes it that much harder.

3. Devin McCourty looks completely at home playing safety.

If the Patriots had a few more players in their secondary as good at their jobs, they would be much better off. Since converting from cornerback, he?s made plays, and they badly needed someone in the middle of the defense who could.

4. You know what else the Patriots could use? A running back with better hands.

Stevan Ridley is talented enough, but you wonder how many more chances he?ll get when turns it over twice in a significant game.

There?s a reason the Patriots have been a home for wayward veterans like Kevin Faulk and others over the years. Trust is important to coach Bill Belichick, and Ridley just burned a good share of his tonight.

5. At different points in the last few weeks, the Packers and 49ers have taken turns looking like they might be the best team in the league.

But both teams have a quiet problem that could loom large in the postseason, with kickers they can?t trust enough.

The Packers keep propping up Mason Crosby, but it?s telling some of the kicks the 49ers don?t let David Akers try any more.

He?s been shaky on all but the short ones all year, and you can easily see it changing play-calling in a close game.

5 Quick Internet Marketing Tips for Landscaping Business Owners ...

Image from http://www.brydgeslandscapearchitecture.comOne of the biggest challenges facing landscaping business owners that I talk to is that of generating well qualified leads for their business. Relying on word of mouth for sustainable business growth and meeting sales and revenue objectives is rarely if ever enough.

  • The Website Matters!

Most landscaping and home improvement companies realize the importance of having a website that is visually stunning and shows off the quality of their workmanship. Your gallery and embedding beautiful images within your content can not be overlooked.

However, an equally important item that is often overlooked is the quantity and quality of your content. Pictures will create initial interest but there has to be more meat in your content to convince people that you are a worthy choice to invest tens of thousands of dollars with.

As well, don?t forget that your website is a piece of technology and not all technology is created equally. You must ensure your website is technically sound in order to ensure that Google will treat you with respect.

I recommend you have your existing website analyzed before you start internet marketing to ensure that you are investing your money in the right areas.

  • Pay Per Click

Everyone wants to show up on the first page of Google!

The only way to guarantee that your website will appear on Page 1 of Google is by using Pay Per Click advertising through Google AdWords.

Google AdWords is easy to use and there are lots of tutorials. Some businesses try it out themselves and find it to be very expensive with little or no results. Just like some home owners try to landscape their own yards and end up making a mess.

I would suggest that for good results, work with a company that has a proven track record of working with Pay Per Click services to generate leads. Trying to do it on your own will only cost you a lot more money in the long run and usually the results will not be great.

The nice thing about PPC is that you will only display your advertising to those who are searching for or are interested in your service and you will only pay for it if they actually click on the ad.

Once someone clicks on your ad, they need to see something that catches their interest right away, which is why Tip #1 is so important!

  • Local Search Engine Optimization

Do you work more than 30 miles/50 kilometers from your central location? Most landscapers that we work with don?t or if they do it?s because of a very lucrative opportunity that draws them out there.

For the most part it doesn?t make sense to invest time, energy, or money on marketing to generate a lot of leads outside of that radius.

Today, Google is so smart at zeroing in on a searchers location that it is no longer necessary to type in a location or city name to get local results, but the only way for Google to know that your website matches the location is to tell them that.

  • Social Media

Your Facebook page is important. You should be updating it, sharing photos and stories on a regular basis. Use it as a way to stay top of mind and present but not to constantly be pushing your services.

Another priceless social media tool for landscapers is Pinterest. It?s a great way to showcase your work and pin beautiful landscapes you come across with a few comments and a link back to your website. There is a lot of value in that link.

  • Load the top of your sales funnel

Not every visitor that lands on your website is ready to sign now. In fact, the majority of visitors are going to be in the research phase, looking for ideas, concepts and other things that will help them identify what they want even before they get to the stage of choosing a vendor.

It is worthwhile to create some whitepaper or how-to guide that answers your buyer?s common questions. Or perhaps you could compile some amazing landscape designs or ideas that your visitors could download.

When you offer this valuable information to someone in the research phase, in exchange for their contact information and email address, you have an opportunity to nurture a relationship with them early on in their buying cycle.

Stocks flat as investors eye fiscal cliff negotiations

    4 hrs.

Wall Street opened flat?at the open Friday as investors digested the latest round of economic data, while concerns about a lack of progress by politicians in ongoing fiscal negotiations remained at the forefront.?

The Dow Jones industrial average was up three points at 13,174 shortly after the opening bell Friday.?

The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged down two points to 1,417 and the Nasdaq composite lost 12 points to 2,979.?

Adobe, which makes Photoshop photo-editing software, jumped 7 percent after the company reported earnings that beat Wall Street's expectations. Analysts are optimistic about the potential of the company's new subscription service to increase revenue.?

Best Buy dropped 12 percent after the struggling electronics retailer and its former chairman agreed to give the executive more time to assemble investors to make a bid for the company.?

Economic data out of China showed that manufacturing in the world's second-largest economy grew at its fastest pace in 14 months in December. That indicated China's economy was on the mend, encouraging news for its key trading partners such as the United States.?

However, in Europe, the euro zone's manufacturing and services sectors showed only small signs of improvement and remained in contraction territory.?

"If we assume we're going to have a continuation of a shallow recession in the euro zone, the global economy can actually increase in terms of GDP with a pick up in the pace of the Chinese economy," said Art Hogan, managing director of Lazard Capital Markets in New York.?

"The bad news is, in large part, we've seen the market ignore relatively good news in the economic data stream as we focus on the fiscal cliff."?

President Barack Obama and House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner held a "frank" meeting Thursday to try to break an impasse in negotiations over the "fiscal cliff," tax hikes and spending cuts set to kick in early in 2013.?

Frustration has mounted over the lack of progress in the discussions, with market participants' worries reflected in a 0.6 percent drop in the S&P 500 on Thursday. Investors are concerned that going over the cliff could tip the economy back into recession. While a deal is expected to be reached eventually, a drawn-out debate - like the one seen over 2011's debt ceiling - can erode confidence.?

"I think the market is convinced, due to the fact that we haven't seen much of a pullback, that some (fiscal) compromise will happen before the end of the year," said Hogan.?

Worries over the outcome of the talks ended the S&P 500's six-day winning streak on Thursday, but the index has performed well over the past month. On Wednesday, the S&P hit its highest intraday level since late October.?

Robert Griffin III again at practice for Redskins

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) ? Robert Griffin III's knee is looking better.

The Washington Redskins rookie was back at practice Thursday, dealing with the effects of a sprained right knee as the team prepares for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns.

Griffin stretched and made some basic throws during the 20 minutes that the practice was open to reporters. He was still favoring his right leg somewhat, but he was able to plant and throw more smoothly than he did during Wednesday's practice.

At one point, Griffin pantomimed taking snaps to the side while backups Kirk Cousins and Rex Grossman ran a drill.

Rock legends take to New York stage for storm Sandy victims

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones joined with actors and comedians in headlining a benefit concert on Wednesday for victims of Superstorm Sandy, which six weeks ago devastated scores of communities along the coastline of the U.S. northeast coastline.

The celebrity-packed "12-12-12" concert at New York's Madison Square Garden stretched on for nearly five hours, and organizers said it was distributed to nearly 2 billion people worldwide through television feeds, radio and online streaming.

"How do I begin again? My city's in ruins," Springsteen sang to the packed crowd. He was joined by fellow New Jersey native Jon Bon Jovi for "Born to Run," ushering in a night of musical duets.

Next up, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters performed alongside Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, and later Paul McCartney jammed with the surviving members of "Nirvana."

"This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden," Mick Jagger told the crowd. The Stones, in the midst of a brief U.S. tour, performed "You Got Me Rocking" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

Chris Martin of Coldplay jokingly suggested audience members should calculate the average age of the night's performers and agree to donate that much. "And I think you'll raise billions," he said.

At the end of the concert, R&B singer Alicia Keys closed the show with "Empire State of Mind."

To help with the fundraising, celebrities such as Kristen Stewart, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chelsea Clinton and Billy Crystal took part in a telethon during the concert.

Comedian Adam Sandler took the stage for a Sandy-themed spoof on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," rhyming the title with "Sandy, Screw Ya!"

Backstage, actress Susan Sarandon recounted losing power in her New York home but said that was a small hardship compared with the real victims who lost their homes.

Steven Van Zandt, guitarist of the E Street Band, scolded "the oil companies" and "Wall Street guys" for not doing more to help.

"Even with the music business not what it used to be ... we are proud to be here," he said.

The concert was broadcast live on television, radio, movie theaters, on Facebook and iHeartRadio, and streamed on digital billboards in New York's Times Square, London and Paris.

    EXPANDING FUNDRAISING'S REACH

More than 130 people were killed when Sandy pummeled the East Coast of the United States in October. Thousands more were left homeless as the storm tore through areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, causing billions of dollars in damage.

Throughout the show, celebrities shared memories of growing up in New York City or the Jersey Shore, and offered shout-outs to first responders.

"Watching my hometown get pummeled was devastating to watch," said actor-comedian Crystal, who grew up on Long Beach, Long Island. "It's a helpless feeling of what's in store for us maybe in the future."

As the show neared its finale, organizers said it had raised $30 million from corporate sponsors, ticket sales and donations. The total raised from called-in pledges will take more time to calculate, said a spokesman for the Robin Hood foundation, the concert's major beneficiary.

Donations raised from the concert produced by Clear Channel Entertainment and the Weinstein Co, will all go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which will provide money and materials to groups helping people hardest hit by the storm.

New Jersey is expected to take 40 percent of the total, while the rest will be divided up between New York City, Long Island and Connecticut.

Bedroom TV viewing increases risk of obesity in children: More than 2 hours of TV a day adds significantly to children's waist size

Dec. 11, 2012 ? The average American child from age 8 to 18 watches about 4.5 hours of TV each day. Seventy percent have a TV in the bedroom and about one-third of youth aged 6-19 is considered obese. Previous studies have shown that TV viewing time during childhood and adolescence continues into adulthood, resulting in overweight and elevated total cholesterol. An investigative team from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA reports new study findings, establishing the relationship between having and watching TV in the bedroom and childhood obesity, specifically high waist circumference.

"The established association between TV and obesity is predominantly based on BMI. The association between TV and fat mass, adiposity stored in specific depots (including abdominal subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue), and cardiometabolic risk, is less well understood," says lead investigator Peter T. Katzmarzyk, PhD. "It is hypothesized that higher levels of TV viewing and the presence of a TV in the bedroom are associated with depot-specific adiposity and cardiometabolic risk."

Between 2010 and 2011, 369 children and adolescents aged 5-18 in Baton Rouge, representing a balance between gender, ethnicity, age, and BMI status, were evaluated for a variety of factors, such as waist circumference, resting blood pressure, fasting triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and glucose, fat mass, and stomach fat.

Statistical analysis of the data developed produced two models. Together, these models revealed that children with a TV in the bedroom were more likely to watch more TV. These children also were shown to have more fat and subcutaneous adipose tissue mass, as well as higher waist circumference, when compared with their peers who did not have a bedroom TV. Study participants with a TV in the bedroom and those who watched TV more than two hours a day were each associated with up to 2.5 times the odds of the highest levels of fat mass. Viewing five or more hours a day produced an association of two times the odds of being in the top quartile for visceral adipose tissue mass. Further, a bedroom TV associated with three times the odds of elevated cardiometabolic risk, elevated waist circumference, and elevated triglycerides.

"There was a stronger association between having a TV in the bedroom versus TV viewing time, with the adiposity and health outcomes," notes study co-author Amanda Staiano, PhD. "A bedroom TV may create additional disruptions to healthy habits, above and beyond regular TV viewing. For instance, having a bedroom TV is related to lower amounts of sleep and lower prevalence of regular family meals, independent of total TV viewing time. Both short sleep duration and lack of regular family meals have been related to weight gain and obesity."

5 Ways Google Affects Our Relationships | YourTango

Is Google making your relationships better or worse?
Is Google making your love life better or worse?

No online stalking or all-day Gchat conversations? Here's how Google has changed dating.

When Gmail was down yesterday, we kind of panicked here in the YourTango office. No email? No Gchat? It felt like time had stopped. OK, it was down for 15 minutes, on and off, but it felt like a lot longer since our lives revolve around the internet. And let's face it: Google ??for better or worse ? affects our relationships in a zillion ways. But there was a time not too long ago (even though it feels like ages ago) when Google (stalking) didn't even exist. Let's look back at what's changed since Google hit the dating scene.

More from YourTango: The Human Whisperers: Horses Act As Couples' Therapists

    1. Pre-Date Screening
Where he works, what he looks like, even his Klout score are available to you at the click of a button before you meet him, thanks to Google. Sure you can feel like a creep when you find yourself viewing his high school football stats or laughing at an article he wrote for his college newspaper, but doing a quick check at his search results can give you some insight into his interests and his past. Just don't get too wrapped up in the search engine ? it won't tell you everything. You'll have to hear his Donald Trump impression in real life to understand how funny he really is. And, just like some guys seem good on paper, some can look better on Google too.

    2. Google Stalking the New Guy
Should you still Google stalk your love interest after you've hung out with him a few times? A new study from BrandYourself found that 43% of U.S. adults have searched potential dates, significant others, or exes. Even though so many of us are doing it, some see searching him online as a curse. I think of it as a necesscity. After seeing my spring break fling's mugshot pop up on my screen, I will always vote yes, Google the guy you just met no matter how sweet he seemed. More on that one another time..

More from YourTango: 4 Ways To Find Love Admist Holiday Craziness

    3. Less Privacy For You
The internet can make it feel like you're dating in small town: Misconceptions and glimpses into the past are easy to come by. Not only can you see his opinions and whereabouts with a quick Google search, he can also see yours. Things that used to be hidden in drawers or boxes under your bed, from pictures of you and your ex on vacation to that wedding dress you just pinned, are now out in the open. Keep Reading...
