Air France to cut 2,500 jobs

A spokesman said the proposed cuts would be made without forced redundancies, saying the exact amount "will be discussed and quantified with unions this fall. It could be a little more than half of the redundancies identified in 2012."

The measure is part of a major restructuring drive called Transform 2015, which has already seen more than 5,000 employees take voluntary redundancy.

The group last week announced net losses of ?793m for the first half of 2013, against wider losses of ?1.27bn in the first half of last year.

Chief executive Alexandre de Juniac at the time welcomed improving results, but warned that further measures would be adopted to reduce costs, including staffing cuts.

Florida gas explosion: 7 injured when Blue Rhino plant blows up

TAVARES, Fla. -- All workers at a Florida gas plant rocked by a series of explosions have been accounted for after as many as 15 were initially feared killed, authorities say.

John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff's Office said early Tuesday that all the workers at the Blue Rhino propane plant had been accounted for and that no fatalities had been reported after explosions hit the plant late Monday night. Seven people were injured and transported to local hospitals.

Herrell earlier had said 15 workers were unaccounted for after the blasts, but all were later found safe.

Herrell said a crew of 24 to 26 people were working at the plant on an overnight shift when the explosions occurred late Monday.

He said seven people were injured and transported to a local hospital and two employees escaped unharmed.

The Blue Rhino plant refilled propane tanks typically used for gas grills.

.Video footage on WESH-TV in Orlando showed fires burning through trucks used to transport propane tanks, which were parked at the plant. The fire was sending plumes of smoke into the air nearly two hours after the blast. Emergency crews could also be seen massing nearby.

Herrell said an evacuation zone was initially a one-mile radius but had been reduced to a half-mile radius. No injuries have been reported from residents in the neighborhood.

Herrell said officials believe the fire is contained and won't spread to another part of the plant but they cannot guarantee that.

Bryan Koon, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, said he was still getting "preliminary information" from local authorities.

The blasts began about 11 p.m.

Herrell said the plant usually has 53,000 20-pound propane tanks.

According to the Leesburg Daily Commercial, the plant was built in 2004 and employs fewer than 50 people.

Gunman dead after shooting six people in Florida apartment building

Updated July 28, 2013 06:30:56

Police have shot dead a gunman who killed six people in a shooting rampage at a Florida apartment building.

The stand-off started when the gunman got into an argument with the husband and wife who ran the apartment complex in the Miami suburb of Hialeah.

Pedro Vargas, 42, opened fire on landlords Italo Pisciotti, 78, and Camira, 68, when they went to his unit to discuss a problem.

Police say he lived in a fourth-floor apartment with his mother and may have been facing eviction.

After he shot dead the landlords, Vargas went to another apartment and killed a man and woman and their teenage daughter.

He then fired from a balcony at a man walking into a building across the street, killing him as well.

He tried to fire at emergency crews and police, missing them but preventing them from giving immediate aid to the victims.

The shooter then took two neighbours hostage and barricaded himself inside a fifth-floor apartment.

Negotiators made contact with him during the night and the SWAT team swarmed in at about 2:00am when talks broke down.

The two hostages escaped unharmed, but the gunman's mother collapsed and was taken to a hospital, police said.

At some point, the gunman managed to set his apartment on fire, leaving the ceiling and hallway charred and setting off sprinklers inside the building.

The apartment complex in the blue-collar, mostly Hispanic community housed about 90 families.

bird cleared of spying for Israel in Turkey

Zionist sharks, Zionist seals, Zionist eagles.. the Arabs regularly seem to think that Israel has mobilized the animal kingdom to work on its behalf. Now they caught a Kestrel they suspected of being a Zionist spy.
bird cleared of spying for Israel in Turkey
A Kestrel is a type of bird from the Falcon family.
This small kestrel flew into Turkish airspace and was picked up by enraged Turks. They suspected it of being an Israeli spy because it was tagged with a metal band with the words "24311 Tel Avivunia Israel". The bird was immediately arrested.
According to some Turkish newspaper, authorities conducted x-rays to determine if the bird was carrying any secret microchips. After no microchips were discovered, the bird was cleared of any crime and was set free.
bird cleared of spying for Israel in Turkey
Turkish authorities have cleared a renegade bird captured in the A??n district of the eastern province of Elaz?? of suspicions of working for Israel's state-of-the-art intelligence agency.
Residents of Alt?navya village became suspicious that the little kestrel could be more than a bird that lost its way when they found it wore a metallic ring stamped with the words "24311 Tel Avivunia Israel," and delivered it to the district governorate.?
Local authorities submitted the bird to careful medical examinations to ensure that it did not carry microchips. An X-ray test carried out at F?rat University in Elaz?? finally convinced the authorities that the bird was just a simple specimen of Israeli wildlife. However, the X-ray showed the initial degree of suspicion, as the bird had been registered under the name "Israeli spy" by medical personnel.
Tagging birds is a common practice in ornithology as it helps scientists track bird migration routes.
Following the tests, the authorities decided not to press official charges and the falsely accused bird was free to fly away.
The big question is if they are going to try to start convincing all sorts of animals to avoid Israel as part of the BDS movement.

Whitey Bulger prosecution rests: What does case add up to?

The prosecution's case features testimony of three former associates who say they witnessed Bulger planning or participating in killings, but it also ties Bulger to other crimes that could send him away for life.

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / July 26, 2013

This pair of file booking photos shows Stephen 'The Rifleman' Flemmi (l.) in 1974 from the Boston Police Department, and James 'Whitey' Bulger in 1984 from the FBI. Mr. Flemmi, a former partner of Mr. Bulger's who is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to 10 killings, was one of three key prosecution witnesses that the defense says are unreliable.

Federal attorneys tied a ribbon around their case against alleged killer and organized crime boss James ?Whitey? Bulger Friday, presenting physical evidence found at the California apartment where he was arrested: guns, fake IDs, and stacks of cash totaling $822,000.

The prosecution rested its case after more than six weeks of witness testimony, bringing the man who long topped the FBI?s ?Most Wanted? list closer to a jury verdict.

The defense will begin presenting its case ? a much shorter one ? Monday.

Mr. Bulger, the reputed leader of a crime gang that was feared in Boston for more than two decades, faces a 32-count racketeering indictment, with alleged activities in his enterprise including money extortion, money laundering, and involvement in 19 murders.

Central to the prosecution case is the testimony of three former Bulger associates. Stephen Flemmi, Kevin Weeks, and John Martorano said they witnessed Bulger planning or participating in killings.

Sometimes, Bulger?s own hands were on a trigger or a victim?s throat, the witnesses said. In others cases, they alleged that he was a mastermind or drove a ?crash car? to run interference if police chased a car with gunmen in it.

In some ways, the defense team is already finished with the biggest part of its work. In their opening statement, the defense attorneys asserted that key witnesses against Bulger are unreliable.

?They certainly have succeeded in meeting that promise,? says David Frank, an attorney and managing editor of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.

Under cross examination, defense attorney Hank Brennan sought to paint the top prosecution witnesses as people who have lied, changed their testimony over the years, or cut deals for lighter sentences in return for what they could say in court as prosecution witnesses.

But Mr. Frank also says that the prosecution side has achieved its basic goals, bringing evidence tied to a range of charges ? not just the murders ? that could keep Bulger locked up for life.

Prosecutors led by Fred Wyshak will ask the jury ?to consider ? the cumulative nature of the evidence,? not just the value of any single piece, Frank says.

And on the murders, just because witnesses have credibility problems doesn?t mean the jury won?t find some of their evidence convincing. In the death of Deborah Hussey, Mr. Flemmi?s step-daughter, both Flemmi and Mr. Weeks have testified to Bulger?s involvement.

Lending credibility to his story, Weeks was able to bring investigators to a location where several murder victims were buried.

On Friday, jurors saw evidence of the many aliases Bulger prepared to hide under. When the FBI searched his apartment after his 2011 arrest, they found Bulger and a longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, living under the names Charles and Carol Gasko.

Investigators also found documents under a variety of other potential aliases Bulger was prepared to use.

Under the name James Lawlor, for instance, they found a New York City birth certificate, Nevada casino cards, and a certificate of military service.

Bulger?s defense attorneys gave Judge Denise Casper a list of witnesses they expect to call on Monday and Tuesday next week, but left it unclear whether their case would extend much beyond that.

Also in doubt is whether Bulger himself will end up testifying.

The Boston Globe reported before the trial that Bulger was eager to take the stand, partly in an effort to clear his name from charges that he strangled two women out of fear that they might give compromising information to law enforcement.

But some legal experts say it would be wiser for him to stay off the witness stand.

Woman assaulted on Howard University campus

WASHINGTON, D.C (WJLA) - A disabled woman who was participating in a program at Howard University was raped on campus Monday morning, sources say.

    Assault on Howard U. campus

The assault happened near the School of Business building on 6th Street Northwest at about 8 a.m. Monday, MPD officials say. Sources say that a man came up behind the 18-year-old victim, forced her into a classroom and raped her.

Sources say the victim is a learning disabled woman whom Howard University officials say was participating in a program on campus that was not affiliated with the school.

In a statement, Howard University officials also say the investigation into the troubling incident is ongoing and it is premature to provide additional details at this time.

Police describe the suspect as a 18 to 20-year-old man wearing a white T-shirt and black and white shorts.

ABC7's Jennifer Donelan contributed to this report.

Staying Healthy May Mean Learning To Love Our Microbiomes

It's busy down there: a gut bacterium splits into two, becoming two new cells.

    Centre For Infections/Science Photo Library/Corbis

Not so long ago, most people thought that the only good microbe was a dead microbe.

But then scientists started to realize that even though some bugs can make us sick and even kill us, most don't.

In fact, in the past decade attitudes about the bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microbes living all over our bodies has almost completely turned around. Now scientists say that not only are those microbes often not harmful, we can't live without them.

"The vast majority of them are beneficial and actually essential to health," says Lita Proctor, program director for the Human Microbiome Project at the National Institutes of Health. The project is identifying microbes on key body parts, including the nose, gut, mouth and skin, in order to get a better sense of the microbes' role in human health.

This sea change began with a pretty simple realization.

"When you're looking in the mirror, what you're really looking at is there are 10 times more microbial cells than human cells," Proctor says. "In almost every measure you can think of, we're more microbial than human."

The horde of microbes is so vast that their genes swamp our genes. In fact, 99 percent of the genes contained in and on our bodies are microbial genes.

Scientists are getting a much broader idea of what microbes do for us. We've known for a long time that we depend on bacteria to digest food. But there's a growing realization that they're really like an 11th organ system. Proctor says, "You know, you have your lungs, you have your heart and, you know, you have your microbiome."

This week, scientists from NIH and research institutions are gathering in Bethesda, Md., to debate the microbiome's role in disease and human health, including obesity, behavior, heart disease and cancer.

Perhaps one of the most important things the microbiome does it to train the human immune system, starting at birth.

"It learns early on which microorganisms are friendly and how to recognize microorganisms that are not so friendly," says David Relman, an assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine who studies the relationships between microbes and humans.

Microbes influence how much energy we burn and how much fat we store. There is even evidence that the microbes in our guts send signals that can affect our minds. These signals may affect how the human brain develops, and our moods and behavior as adults.

People who live in places like the United States tend to have far less diverse microbiomes than people who live in less developed countries and take fewer antibiotics. That, some scientists think, could be a factor in human diseases.

"As organisms are being lost, a lot of diseases have just skyrocketed," says Martin Blaser, who directs the human microbiome program at the NYU Langone Medical Center. He lists diabetes, celiac disease, asthma, food allergies, obesity and developmental disorders like autism as health problems that have become more common.

But many researchers caution that we're still a long way from knowing if the microbiome is involved in any of those diseases and conditions.

"Yes, the microbiome is important," says Jonathan Eisen, a professor who studies genes, microbes and evolution at the University of California, Davis. "Yes, the microbiome differs between all sorts of health and disease states. But no, we don't know that the microbiome causes these health or disease states."

? We're not just us by ourselves, but a combination of us and them.

Even more important, Eisen says: we don't know how to fix a microbiome, even if we knew what was wrong with it.

Still, some doctors have already started performing microbe transplants. Fecal transplants have been used to cure people with life-threatening infections with the bacterium Clostridium difficile. The patient's ailing gut bacteria is replaced with new colonies donated by a healthy person.

Getting good bacteria to drive out bad is also the idea behind probiotics, which are widely marketed as health supplements. But it's still unclear which of those microbes are helpful, and for whom. The same goes for prebiotics, which serve as food for microbes.

This expanding view of the microbiome is changing how some people think about humans ? not as individual entities but as what philosopher Rosamond Rhodes calls a "supraorganism."

"We're not just us by ourselves but a combination of us and them," Rhodes says. "And that makes us very much more a part of our environment as opposed to something freestanding and separate from our environment. Those are very radical changes in the way we see self-identity."

Rhodes, who is also a bioethicist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, says some people might find this idea shocking or gross. "But I think it's going to slowly seep into our culture and understanding of ourselves and change our understanding and consequently our behavior in important ways."

    User:Holt/XS Community Edition/FAQ

    From OLPC

[edit] How does XS Community Edition (XSCE) help?

Read about Internet-in-a-Box and building your school's very own ebook library below. Bring the power of a (generally free) Digital Library of Alexandria into the hands of any school worldwide.

A School Server brings your classroom/school laptops together, communicating & coordinating learning in ways that deeply empower kids, teachers and community.

XSCE is built by professional volunteers, inspired by One Laptop per Child's famous laptops and their innovative Sugar Learning Platform -- but serving all!

To get a taste of longer-term possible roadmaps, please see Tony Anderson's suggested use cases, and one possible larger XSCE Vision.

[edit] What hardware should I use?

XSCE (XS Community Edition) is free software that runs on many different hardware platforms, listed below.

    • Deployment Managers: an all-inclusive, tough and lower-power unit (great for developing world) is expected later in 2013, using resilient TrimSlice devices. Please check back in coming months!

[edit] What OS should I use?

Smaller deployments often prefer the comprehensive features provided by a recent version of the Fedora Operating System, eg. Fedora 18, similar to OLPC Release 13.2.0.

Larger deployments often prefer the 10-year-support (security updates, etc) provided by CentOS to minimize upgrade/maintenance costs.

Both above are free and open software systems supported by enterprise Linux corp Red Hat, Inc founded in 1993.

Other OS/distribution support for this global community project would be most welcome in future!

[edit] What can I do with ebooks (Pathagar) and Internet-in-a-Box??

Starting around August 2013, XSCE 0.4 should allow you to build a great collection of electronic books for your school (thanks to Pathagar). Alongside a packed hard-drive full of the incredible Wikipedia + Maps + Literature + Khan Academy resources of http://internet-in-a-box.org.

This permits entirely new opportunities for semi-connected schools and offline libraries worldwide, for the 1st time ever in 2013.

We'd like educators' suggestions especially -- how should kids best take advantage of these crown jewels of learning? Perhaps starting with OLPC/Sugar's laptop browser in places like:

     http://schoolserver/maps http://schoolserver/books http://schoolserver/library http://schoolserver/khanacademy

[edit] How do I get Internet-in-a-Box updates every few months or semester?

Great question: the magicians behind http://internet-in-a-box.org anticipate this will be critical. Several people are working on streamlining this process, ideally with an on-demand mail-order service available on different continents, to wipe your terabyte/external hard drive clean with the latest free maps/encyclopedia/books/video lessons, for a extremely low shipping/service fee. Keep in touch!

[edit] How do I provide Wifi (wireless) to all my kids?

Specific recommendations are coming, no matter how large or small your school. This is a vital engineering piece for schools, libraries and orphanages even when offline -- so kids can take advantage of the amazing free "digital libraries" of http://internet-in-a-box.org and Pathagar ebooks.

Please join the http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/server-devel mailing list to ask us all for the latest tips about high-performance Wifi access points, depending on your coverage needs.

And if your school is online, this is a great place to ask about various schools' filtering recommendations for different age groups.

And please share your experience so that we can build a repertoire of devices that work.

[edit] How do I provide Solar Power to my school or orphanage?

This is a very hard question depending on the growth path of your electrical needs, maintenance options within the country in question, price, theft, etc. Some experienced deployment voices hope to provide concrete example recommendations later in 2013, typically involving a standard 12-volt deep-cycle battery. Please don't wait to get your feet wet today however! That means investing in the hard work of research, getting this right for your own community:

    http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XO_Solar
    http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/power
    http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Battery_and_power
    http://schoolserver.wordpress.com/training/power-when-its-not-always-available/

Thanks for taking solar engineering seriously, as we do wherever possible!

    [edit] Where are the docs?

Please see the "Installing" and "Configuring" sections in the latest release, off of http://schoolserver.org

Also: Add a Service to School Server by Creating a Plugin (original written April 2013) and others by George Hunt at http://schoolserver.wordpress.com

Coming Soon: Anish Mangal hopes to formally write up his deployment recommendations based on his experience setting up XSCE in Northern India in May and June of 2013.

[edit] Where is XSCE is active use?

Since June 2013, XS Community Edition is being used in two small OLPC implementations -- an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti as well as in a village in Northern India: http://bhagmalpur.wordpress.com

Of course, many contributors are using XSCE for other personal/community purposes as well, helping refine our community product for diverse/larger deployments.

[edit] What's missing that I can contribute?

Funny & great you asked! For now, til we get everyone's many ideas, use cases and docs organized, please see these volunteer engagement opportunities.

Please also suggest your own ideas on public mailing list server-devel@lists.laptop.org, or contact Adam Holt (holt @ laptop.org).

[edit] How did XSCE's design evolve?

Here's our brief-but-growing participatory design archive / lineage:

Original OLPC XS design and implementation is available here.

Community history is vital to all seeking to avoid reinventing mistakes of the past, thanks to Everyone's thoughtful input past & present!
