CAIRO/ISMAILIA, Egypt ? Egypt's armed forces deployed troops in the city of Suez early on Saturday after nine people were shot dead during nationwide protests against President Mohamed Morsi, underlining the country's deep divisions as it marked the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

Eight of the dead, including a policeman, were shot dead in Suez, and another was shot and killed in the city of Ismailia, medics said. Another 456 people were injured across Egypt, officials said, in unrest on Friday fueled by anger at Morsi and his Islamist allies over what the protesters see as their betrayal of the revolution.

Morsi said the state would not hesitate in "pursuing the criminals and delivering them to justice." In a statement, he also called on Egyptians to respect the principles of the revolution by expressing their views peacefully.

The troops were deployed in Suez after the head of the state security police in the city asked for reinforcements. The army distributed pamphlets to residents assuring them the deployment was temporary and meant to secure the city.

"We have asked the armed forces to send reinforcements on the ground until we pass this difficult period," Adel Refaat, head of state security in Suez, told state television.

Friday's anniversary laid bare the divide between the Islamists and their secular rivals.

The schism is hindering the efforts of Morsi, elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a plunge in Egypt's currency by enticing back investors and tourists.

Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose that united Egyptians two years ago has given way to internal strife that already triggered bloody street battles last month.

Return to Tahrir Square
Thousands of opponents of Morsi massed on Friday in Cairo's Tahrir Square ? the cradle of the revolt against Mubarak ? to rekindle the demands of a revolution they say has been hijacked by the Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which Morsi emerged.

In Suez, the military deployed armoured vehicles to guard state buildings, witnesses and security sources said, as symbols of government were targeted across the country.

Street battles erupted in cities including Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port Said. Arsonists attacked at least two state-owned buildings. An office used by the Muslim Brotherhood's political party was also torched.

"Our revolution is continuing. We reject the domination of any party over this state. We say no to the Brotherhood state," Hamdeen Sabahy, a popular leftist leader, told Reuters.

The Brotherhood decided against mobilizing for the anniversary, wary of the scope for more conflict after December's violence, stoked by Mursi's decision to fast-track an Islamist-tinged constitution rejected by his opponents.

The Brotherhood denies accusations that it is seeking to dominate Egypt, labelling them a smear campaign by its rivals.

There were conflicting accounts of the lethal shooting in Suez. Some witnesses said security forces had opened fire in response to gunfire from masked men.

News of the deaths capped a day of violence that started in the early hours of Friday. Before dawn in Cairo, police battled protesters who threw petrol bombs and firecrackers as they approached a wall blocking access to government buildings near Tahrir Square.

Clouds of teargas filled the air. At one point, riot police used one of the incendiaries thrown at them to set ablaze at least two tents erected by youths, a Reuters witness said.

Skirmishes between stone-throwing youths and the police continued in streets around the square into the day.?

Ambulances ferried away a steady stream of casualties.

Protesters echoed the chants of 2011's historic 18-day uprising.

'We are not here to celebrate'
"The people want to bring down the regime," they chanted. "Leave! Leave! Leave!'' chanted others as they marched towards the square.

"We are not here to celebrate but to force those in power to submit to the will of the people. Egypt now must never be like Egypt during Mubarak's rule," said Mohamed Fahmy, an activist.

There were similar scenes in Suez and Alexandria, where protesters and riot police clashed near local government offices. Black smoke billowed from tyres set ablaze by youths.

In Cairo, police fired teargas to disperse a few dozen protesters trying to remove barbed-wire barriers protecting the presidential palace, witnesses said. A few masked men got as far as the gates before they were beaten back.

Teargas was also fired at protesters who tried to remove metal barriers outside the state television building.

Outside Cairo, protesters broke into the offices of provincial governors in Ismailia and Kafr el-Sheikhin the Nile Delta. A local government building was torched in the Nile Delta city of al-Mahalla al-Kubra.

With an eye on parliamentary elections likely to begin in April, the Brotherhood marked the anniversary with a charity drive across the nation. It plans to deliver medical aid to one million people and distribute affordable basic foodstuffs.

Writing in Al-Ahram, Egypt's flagship state-run daily, Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie said the country was in need of "practical, serious competition'' to reform the corrupt state left by the Mubarak era.

"The differences of opinion and vision that Egypt is passing through is a characteristic at the core of transitions from dictatorship to democracy, and clearly expresses the variety of Egyptian culture," he wrote.

Mursi's opponents say he and his group are seeking to dominate the post-Mubarak order. They accuse him of showing some of the autocratic impulses of the deposed leader by, for example, driving through the new constitution last month.

The Brotherhood says its rivals are failing to respect the rules of the new democracy that put the Islamists in the driving seat via free elections.

Studies provide insights into inherited causes of autism

Jan. 23, 2013 ? The most consistent finding of autism research lies in the revelation that the disorders are incredibly complex. Two new studies in the January 23 issue of the Cell Press journal Neuron that add to the growing appreciation of this complexity focus on identifying inherited genetic mutations linked with autism spectrum disorders. The mutations -- which are distinct from the spontaneous mutations that have been the focus of previous studies -- may provide valuable insights into the causes of autism.

"It's long been known that autism is a heritable condition and that some cases appear to run in families. Our studies are among the first to begin to address this heritable component," says Dr. Christopher Walsh of Boston Children's Hospital, who is the senior author of one of the papers.

Both groups sequenced the portion of the genome that codes for proteins, also known as the exome, in individuals with autism, their relatives, and controls. In one study, investigators focused on rare mutations that completely abolish the function of particular genes -- and therefore the expression of a protein. "We utilized new genome-sequencing technologies to discover a component of autism that can be traced to recessive inheritance -- that is, when a child inherits two broken copies of the same gene, one from each parent who is a carrier," explains senior author Dr. Mark Daly of Massachusetts General Hospital and the Broad Institute. "There were twice as many autism cases as control individuals that were apparently missing an important protein somewhere in the genome," he adds. Their findings suggest that 5% of autism risk is linked to inherited mutations that completely disrupt the functions of genes.

Like Dr. Daly and his colleagues, Dr. Walsh and his team identified and characterized cases of autism due to the inheritance of two gene mutations, one from each parent. In this work, though, the researchers found that the partial loss of a gene's function -- not only complete absence of function -- is linked to autism spectrum disorders. They identified several genes -- such as those involved in neurometabolic pathways -- that were not previously associated with autism risk, and they revealed a striking variability of autism severity despite inheritance of similar genetic mutations.

"These two studies firmly establish that recessive mutations contribute importantly to autism, not just in specialized populations but in the population at large," says first author Dr. Timothy Yu, of Boston Children's Hospital.

With follow-up work, identifying the various genes that are silent or partially disabled in autism cases can provide key clues to understanding the underlying biology of autism spectrum disorders and potentially help generate new therapies.

S. Africa: Nigerian suspect in 2010 bombing guilty

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? A South African court on Monday said a Nigerian terror suspect was guilty of masterminding twin car bombings during a celebration in Nigeria.

The double bombing in October 2010 during a celebration in Nigeria's capital to mark 50 years of independence killed at least 12 people and wounded three dozen.

Henry Okah, found guilty on all counts, faces a minimum sentence of life in prison, said Shaun Abrahams, the prosecutor, who praised the verdict.

"This is clearly indicative that South Africa cannot be seen as a safe haven for international terrorists," Abrahams told The Associated Press. He praised South African law enforcement for working well with foreign law enforcement "to make sure justice is done in Africa."

Judge Neels Claassen said South Africa had proved Okah's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. He added that Okay's failure to testify meant evidence against him remained uncontested.

Okah was arrested in Johannesburg one day after the Oct. 1, 2010 bombings. He is a leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, known as MEND, which claimed responsibility for the blasts. Okah still faces charges relating to two explosions in March 2010 in the southern Nigerian city of Warri.

Sentencing is expected on January 31. Okah was found guilty of engaging in terrorist activities, conspiracy to engage in terrorist activity, and delivering, placing, and detonating an explosive device.

MEND launched some of the most audacious attacks on foreign oil companies and contractors working in the Niger Delta, a region of swamps and mangroves about the size of Portugal.

After the October 2010 bombings, MEND largely went quiet as Okah and others faced charges.

Despite a 2009 government amnesty deal, kidnappings and attacks still regularly occur in the delta. And thefts of crude oil have continued to rise.

Not all inaugural addresses are created equal

By Tom Curry, National Affairs Writer, NBC News

All inaugural addresses are not created equal, but through the course of the nation?s history, presidents have used the occasion to sketch their visions on topics as old as the republic itself ? unity, sacrifice and the proper role of government.

By the time Barack Obama delivered his first inaugural address on Jan. 20, 2009, he had already become famous as an orator with his smashing debut at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and his Iowa caucus victory speech in January 2008.

?There is not a liberal America and conservative America ? there is the United States of America,? he declared in the 2004 speech.

A star was born that night and his exhilarating speech on the night he won the Iowa caucuses in 2008 proved to his fans that his rhetorical skill could carry him to the presidency.

He claimed victory in Iowa over those who "said this country was too divided, too disillusioned, to ever come together around a common purpose. But on this January night, at this defining moment in history, you have done what the cynics said we couldn't do.?

By the time Obama stood up to take his oath of office at the Capitol, the improbable had become reality. The ?cynics? had long since been vanquished.

A huge team has been working overtime on the inaugural weekend plans leading up to President Barack Obama taking the oath of office. Stephanie Cutter, chair of the Presidential Inaugural Committee Board, discusses.

Like other presidents in their inaugural addresses, Obama in 2009 faced the familiar tasks of sounding a call for national renewal and proclaiming a faith in ordinary Americans.

As Bill Clinton had said in his first inaugural in 1993, ?There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured by what is right with America.? Many inaugural speeches ? from Thomas Jefferson?s in 1801 to Ronald Reagan?s in 1981 to Obama?s in 2009 -- are elaborations of the upbeat theme that Clinton sounded in 1993.

Since an inauguration ? especially a first one ? is a fresh start, the newly sworn-in president naturally will proclaim that voters have brought about long-overdue change. ?You have changed the face of Congress, the presidency and the political process itself.? That wasn?t Obama speaking in 2009; it was Bill Clinton in his 1993 inaugural address.

Moral improvement
Obama?s first inaugural seems at certain points remarkably personal. In it he did not mention his mother, whom he had often evoked in his 2008 campaign speeches, but he did twice mention his father ? whom he never saw after he was 10 years old.

His own life story and the nation?s history were uniquely intertwined, Obama implied, alluding at one point to all the people around the globe watching him taking the oath, including the people in ?the small village where my father was born? in Kenya.

He said America?s ability to reform itself was ?why a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.?

Obama offered a strikingly optimistic view of every nation?s ability to become more like America at its best: capable of moral improvement, tolerant, and committed to unifying and noble ideals, without regard to a person?s ethnicity or skin color.

?Because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself,? he said.

His defeat of John McCain in the November election and of Hillary Clinton and other rivals in the Democratic primaries was a victory of ideals: ?We have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.?

Like Clinton in 1993, Obama said that voters had changed the American political system itself: ?On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics.?

As for just one of the specific promises Obama made in that speech: ?We will wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost.?

He did sign into law a landmark health care overhaul but whether its provisions will lower the cost of medical care has yet to be determined.

Role of government
Obama used his inaugural to join the long-running debate with small government conservatives ? a debate that Clinton had joined in his second inaugural address in 1997.

Abraham Lincoln swore the oath in front of an incomplete Capitol dome. Lyndon B. Johnson became president on Air Force One next to a dazed Jacqueline Kennedy. A collection of photographs from past presidential inaugurations.

Reagan had said in 1981, ?In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.?

In his 1997 inaugural, Clinton rebutted Reagan, or at least tried to redefine the debate: ?We have resolved for our time a great debate over the role of government. Today we can declare: government is not the problem, and government is not the solution. We ? the American people ? we are the solution.?

Obama, once again assailing unnamed ?cynics? as he did in his Iowa speech, said in his inaugural address that his election allowed Americans to move beyond old arguments about the size of the federal government.

?What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them; that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply,? he declared. ?The question we ask today is not whether our Government is too big or too small, but whether it works; whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end.?

So far, that last promise has not yet been kept: Obama has significantly expanded the federal role in health care but hasn?t yet ended any major federal program.

What makes an inaugural speech one for the history books is a president?s eloquence at a moment of national crisis. Very few inaugural addresses are, like Lincoln?s immortal and remarkably short (701 words) second inaugural, carved in their entirety in granite on the National Mall or anywhere else, but on some rare occasions a president?s words do seem to define an era.

Franklin Roosevelt did that in 1933, at the depth of the gravest economic crisis of modern times, attacking what he called ?the unscrupulous money changers? whose practices ?stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men.?

He said, ?The money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization.?

That scalding attack on Wall Street is less well remembered today than FDR?s serene confidence in a dark hour: ?This great nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.?

Alvarez Files Suit Seeking Ouster Of Thornton HS Board President

Thornton Township High School District 205 board president Kenneth Williams (Credit: District 205)

Thornton Township High School District 205 board president Kenneth Williams (Credit: District 205)

CHICAGO (STMW) ? Cook County State?s Attorney Anita Alvarez filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to oust the board president of Thornton High School District 205, who refuses to resign over a 1985 forgery conviction.

Last month, Kenneth Williams received a letter from the state?s attorney?s office demanding he resign because he?s a felon. He was convicted of forgery in Indiana in 1985.

The state?s attorney?s office gave Williams until Tuesday to respond. He faxed a letter to the state?s attorney?s office Tuesday saying he refuses to resign, said a spokeswoman for State?s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

The suit, filed in Cook County Chancery Court, claims Williams is not eligible to retain his seat because state election law prohibits anyone convicted of an ?infamous crime? ? including forgery ? to hold office.

Alvarez asks the court to force Williams to show how he is eligible to hold office, and if he cannot, oust him as board president, according to the suit.

Williams could not be reached for comment, and no one could be reached at the District 205 administrative offices Wednesday evening.

Several board members support the effort to oust Williams. On Jan. 11, they sent a letter to Alvarez saying Williams and two other board members ? including Williams? wife ? are trying to control the district?s finances and ?to employ family and friends.?

?The aggressive actions by this group must be stopped as soon as possible,? said the letter by board members Edward Crayton, Ray Banks and Arthur Burton.

From network contact to network solution from 7 Business ...

A colleague introduced Ian to Award Productions Ltd, a ?bricks and clicks? retailer of military memorabilia, who needed help to install a structured cabling system for his computer network. It soon became evident that Award?s issues were not limited to cabling. Ian?s experienced eye quickly identified problems with the network equipment and phone system.

Kevin Paton, owner of Award, realised that he had found just what his situation demanded in 7 Business Solutions. He was in the process of establishing a retail shop in Shrewsbury in addition to a successful online retail operation. Spread across two locations, his IT infrastructure was in urgent need of upgrading to cope with new demands. Ian was asked to advise what was needed and then implement the agreed plan. That included a phone system, improved broadband and networking equipment linking the two sites securely for data sharing.

For Ian Ross it was further proof, if proof were needed, that his business model of providing expert business IT and telecoms advice, supply and support answered a real need amongst Shropshire?s small and medium sized businesses.

Kevin agreed, saying, ?We had a clear idea of what we wanted to achieve and ? what we thought to be ? the ideal outcome. Ian was able to demonstrate clearly the benefits of his alternative solutions and took a far more ?future-proof? approach in his thinking. I have been very impressed with the can-do attitude of the company and have really felt that I could leave this project in safe hands.?

For Award, Ian?s tag line for 7 Business Solutions ?Paracetamol for your technology headaches? ? had proved to be absolutely true.

34 people killed, including seven children, in attack by Syrian troops on Damascus suburbs

At least 34 people, including seven children, have been killed in an
attack by Syrian troops in suburbs of the capital, Damascus, Syrian
    activists said today.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 19 of the dead, including all seven children, were killed by government air strikes and artillery in eastern Ghouta district yesterday.

The rest of the casualties were in a host of other towns and villages outside the capital.

The Observatory said yesterday's bombardment was one of the heaviest of the 22-month-old conflict.

It added that 10 rebels were also killed in clashes with troops in Damascus suburbs.

Clinical trial finds intensive treatment highly effective for children with high-functioning autism

Jan. 11, 2013 ? In a second randomized clinical trial, researchers at the Institute for Autism Research at Canisius College have found a comprehensive summer treatment (summer Max) to be highly effective for children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (HFASDs). Children with the disorders endure lifelong impairments involving social and social-communicative functioning and restricted and repetitive interests and behaviors. Despite their significant needs, few comprehensive programs have been developed and validated for children with HFASDs.

Results of this randomized clinical trial found the comprehensive summer treatment to be effective in improving the social performance and clinical symptoms of children with HFASDs. According to Marcus L. Thomeer, PhD and Christopher Lopata, PsyD, the study's lead authors, the findings, which appeared in the journal, Psychology in the Schools (December 2012), supports and extends the findings of a previous randomized trial that initially demonstrated the efficacy of the manualized treatment.

Following the 5-week program, children in the treatment group demonstrated significantly higher scores on child measures of non-literal language skills and knowledge of appropriate social behaviors, as well as significantly higher parent-ratings for targeted and broader social skills and significantly lower ratings of autism symptoms compared to children in the control group. Secondary staff ratings corroborated the significant gains reported by parents. A follow-up assessment 2-3 months post-treatment for the treatment group indicated that the significant gains in social functioning were maintained, and a positive trend suggested that the reduction in autism symptoms continued.

According to Thomeer, "the increase in child understanding along with the increase in parent ratings of social and social-communication skills suggests that the children in treatment acquired new skills and social-cognitive understanding and translated those into effective social performance outside the treatment setting. This is an important finding as generalization of skills and behaviors beyond the treatment setting are a major obstacle for children with HFASDs." The significant decrease in autism symptoms following treatment is also noteworthy as few treatments have been able to reduce these long-term impediments to daily functioning.

One improvement over the previous trial was the addition of follow-up measures in the current study. "The follow-up measures allowed us to determine that the positive treatment effects on social performance continued to be present 2-3 months after the treatment ended," said Lopata. "Although not as robust as the social gains, the children in the treatment group also continued to show reduced autism symptoms." Results of these two randomized clinical trials provide strong evidence of the effectiveness of this unique comprehensive summer treatment for children with HFASDs. Thomeer noted that "this is the first comprehensive treatment specifically for children with HFASDs to be found effective in two randomized trials."

A total of 35 children, ages 7-12 years participated, with 17 randomly assigned to receive the treatment and 18 to a wait-list control condition. Children in the treatment were in groups of six children and three clinical staff. The treatment was conducted five days per week over five weeks and targeted clinical and associated features of autism spectrum disorders including social skills, non-literal language skills, emotion recognition skills, and interest expansion.

Treatment was provided during five, 70-minute treatment cycles each day using direct instruction, modeling, role-playing, and performance feedback. Each treatment cycle consisted of 20-minutes of skills instruction followed by a 50-minute therapeutic activity designed to practice and reinforce target skills. A point system was used to reinforce positive social behaviors and reduce autism symptoms and negative behaviors across the treatment day. Weekly parent education was also provided.

Astronauts may use trash as radiation shield

Humans produce trash just about everywhere they go, including space, which will pose a problem for astronauts on long voyages to other planets. But scientists have found a way to transform this space detritus into something useful: a radiation shield.

Since flinging garbage out the door is not an option, engineers at NASA are testing how a novel on-board trash compactor could give new life to discarded water bottles, clothing scraps, duct tape and other waste on deep-space missions.

The space trash compactor is not like the giant one on the Death Star that nearly squashed Luke Skywalker and the gang in the first "Star Wars" film. This one is smaller, producing circular tiles of trash 8 inches (20 centimeters) wide and a half-inch (1.3 cm) from a single day's worth of garbage. The discs then could be stowed away, or even used for radiation shielding to protect a spacecraft?s crew, NASA officials said.

"One of the ways these discs could be reused is as a radiation shield because there's a lot of plastic packaging in the trash," Mary Hummerick, a Qinetiq North America microbiologist at Kennedy Space Center in Florida working on the project, said in a statement. "The idea is to make these tiles, and, if the plastic components are high enough, they could actually shield radiation."

Beyond low-Earth orbit, astronauts are bombarded with harmful cosmic rays, which can boost the risk of certain diseases such as cancer and neurological damage. And the longer one spends in space, the greater the risk. The radiation dangers are especially of concern given NASA?s plans for a manned mission to an asteroid by 2025, and then on to Mars by the mid 2030s ? the round trip to the Red Planet alone could take at least two years.

Trash tiles could, for example, bolster the space radiation shielding around the astronauts' sleeping quarters or perhaps a small area in the spacecraft that would be built up to serve as a storm shelter to protect crews from solar flare effects, NASA officials said.

Devised by engineers at NASA?s Ames Research Center in California, the compactor heats the trash for 3.5 hours to between 300 and 350 degrees Fahrenheit (148 and 176 degrees Celsius), melting the garbage, but not incinerating it. The process reduces the trash by at least 10 times the original size and squeezes out water that could be recycled.

Hummerick said strips containing bacterial spores are being embedded in test tiles to see if the heating and compaction process is effective in killing bacteria. Her team at Kennedy is expecting to get back a new batch of compacted tiles from Ames soon and will next test if the discs remain sterile in long-term storage.

"They are achieving sterilization for the most part," Hummerick said. "What we don't know is, can a few possible surviving bacteria go inert and then grow back?"

NASA mission planners need to think about how to handle trash to make use of limited resources during long journeys and to prevent spacecraft from becoming filled with garbage. Trashed tossed out of a spaceship could potentially threaten to contaminate other worlds, and NASA policy dictates that such pollution should be avoided.

Cheating slime mold gets the upper hand

    Wednesday, January 9, 2013

A 'cheater' mutation (chtB) in Dictyostelium discoideum, a free living slime mould able to co-operate as social organism when food is scarce, allows the cheater strain to exploit its social partner, finds a new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Evolutionary Biology. The mutation ensures that when mixed with 'normal' Dictyosteliummore than the fair share of cheaters become spores, dispersing to a new environment, and avoiding dying as stalk cells.

Dictyosteliumhave an unusual life style. They generally live as individual amoeboid cells, eating bacteria in leaf litter and soil. However when they run out of food they form a multi-cellular 'slug' capable of travelling to a new environment. However if conditions are right they behave more like a fungus, producing a stalk and a fruiting body which releases spores. During this co-operative behaviour approximately 20% become stalk cells which are doomed to starvation but, after dispersal, the spores germinate into new amoeba.

The chtB strain is able to reduce the ability of normal Dictyostelium to form spores so that when mixed in equal numbers with wild type Dictyostelium60% of the spores will be chtB. The chtB mutation appeared to be normal in all other respects and the mutation had no 'fitness cost' which might impede its behaviour or lifespan. In fact the mutation allowed chtB to divide faster in liquid medium.

Dr Lorenzo Santorelli from the University of Oxford who led this study, conducted at Baylor College of Medicine in the Shaulsky lab explained, "chtB cells inhibit the pre-spore gene cotB in their wild type partner. This appears to force the wild type Dictyosteliumto become cells at the base of the stalk rather than stalk cells or spores. Cheaters are essentially parasites, but we could not find the expected fitness cost which usually prevents such cheaters from taking over."

2nd Winehouse inquest held after coroner glitch

(AP) ? A British court is holding a second inquest into the death of Amy Winehouse after the coroner who ruled the singer had drunk herself to death was found to lack the proper qualifications.

The soul singer was found dead at her London home in July 2011 at the age of 27. An inquest later that year found that the star had died from accidental alcohol poisoning.

The coroner later resigned after her qualifications were questioned. She had been hired by her husband, the senior coroner for inner north London. But she had not been a registered lawyer in Britain for five years as required.

The family has said Tuesday's hearing at St. Pancras Coroner's Court is expected to reach the same conclusion about the cause of death.

China newspaper dispute sparks petition, protest

BEIJING (AP) ? A dispute over censorship at a Chinese newspaper known for edgy reporting evolved Monday into a political challenge for China's new leadership as prominent scholars demanded a censor's dismissal and hundreds of protesters called for democratic reforms.

The scholars and protesters were acting in support of the Southern Weekly in its confrontation with a top censor after the publication was forced to change a New Year's editorial calling for political reform into a tribute praising the ruling Communist Party. Rumors circulated that at least one of the newspaper's news departments was going on strike, but they could not be immediately confirmed.

Protesters, including middle school students and white-collar workers, gathered outside the offices of the newspaper in the southern city of Guangzhou to lay flowers at the gate, hold signs and shout slogans calling for freedom of speech, political reform, constitutional governance and democracy.

"I feel that the ordinary people must awaken," said one of the protesters, Yuan Fengchu, who was reached by phone. "The people are starting to realize that their rights have been taken away by the Communist Party and they are feeling that they are being constantly oppressed."

Political expression in the public sphere is often viewed as risky in China, where the authoritarian government frequently harasses and even jails dissidents for pro-democracy calls.

Another protester, Guangzhou writer and activist Wu Wei, who goes by the pen name Ye Du, said the protest marked a rare instance in which people were making overt calls for political freedom since large-scale pro-democracy demonstrations were crushed in a military crackdown in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

"In other cities, we've seen people march, but most of the time they are protesting environmental pollution or people's livelihood issues," Wu said. "Here they are asking for political rights, the right to protest. The Southern Weekly incident has provided an opportunity for citizens to voice their desires."

The protest came as 18 Chinese academics signed an open letter calling for the dismissal of Tuo Zhen, a provincial propaganda minister blamed for the censorship. The scholars included legal professors, liberal economists, historians and writers.

Peking University law professor He Weifang, who was among the signers, said the newspaper's good work needed to be defended from censorship.

"Southern Weekly is known as a newspaper that exposes the truth, but after Tuo Zhen arrived in Guangdong, he constantly pressured the paper. We need to let him know that he can't do this," He said. "This incident is a test to see if the new leadership is determined to push political reform."

Six weeks ago, China installed a new generation of Communist Party leaders for the next five years, with current Vice President Xi Jinping at the helm. Some of Xi's announcements for a trimmed-down style of leadership, with reduced waste and fewer unnecessary meetings, have raised hopes in some quarters that he might favor deeper reforms in the political system to mollify a public long frustrated by local corruption.

The Guangdong provincial propaganda department did not immediately respond to a faxed list of questions. But the Communist Party-run Global Times newspaper said in an editorial that no Chinese media outlet should fool itself into thinking that it could occupy a "political special zone" in which it is free from government control.

"Regardless of whether these people are willing or unwilling, common sense says: In China's current social political reality, there cannot be the kind of 'free media' that these people hope in their hearts for," the editorial said.

China's media in recent years have become increasingly freewheeling in some kinds of coverage, including lurid reports on celebrities and sports figures. Still, censorship of political issues remains tight ? although government officials typically claim there is no censorship at all ? and the restrictions have drawn increasingly vocal criticism from journalists and members of the public.

Bee Species Named after 'Big Bang Theory' Catchphrase - Ft. Smith ...

    big bang photo

(CNN) ? If you watch ?The Big Bang Theory,? you probably laugh every time Sheldon Cooper says the B-word: ?Bazinga!?

Now, in one of those amusing science-imitates-art moments, ?bazinga? has been officially dubbed a species of a bee.

The writers of the hit comedy probably never imagined that the persnickety physicist Cooper?s favorite word would be immortalized in actual science.

But thanks to a team of Brazilian biologists, a Brazilian orchid bee is now known by the name Euglossa bazinga.

?The idea was to honor actor Jim Parsons and his brilliant interpretation of Sheldon Cooper,? Dr. Andr? Nem?sio, a biology professor at the Universidade Federal de Uberl?ndia in Brazil told CNN.

?The show exaggerates a little bit, but in a sarcastic way, it shows how things do happen in the academic world,? he added. ?It is fantastic!?

Of course, it doesn?t hurt that the name draws attention to these creatures.

?Many orchid-bee species inhabit forested areas that may soon vanish and, as a consequence, it is possible that the bees might disappear, too,? Nem?sio said.

?For many areas and many species, only a strong action from the society can reverse the extinction process. So, I think it is also a valid way to make people know about these wonderful creatures and the situation concerning their conservation status.?

For his part, ?Big Bang Theory? executive producer Steve Molaro responded in a press release: ?We are always extremely flattered when the science community embraces our show. Sheldon would be honored to know that Euglossa bazinga was inspired by him. In fact, after ?Mothra? and griffins, bees are his third-favorite flying creatures.?

What To Expect When Your Personal Injury ... - Preszler Law Firm

Personal Injury TrialThe majority of personal injury claims are settled out of court.? However, for those claims where you and the person you have sued cannot reach a fair resolution, it will be necessary to go to Trial and ask a Judge or Jury to decide the case.

Most personal injury Trials are conducted in front of a Jury of six people.? The Jurors are considered the triers of fact.? The Trial Judge will decide what evidence is admissible at Trial and the Jury will be asked to decide whether the person you have sued was at fault for the accident, and then assign a dollar value to the injuries you have sustained.

The person who was injured and is seeking compensation is known as the ?Plaintiff?.? The Defendant is the person being sued by the Plaintiff.

The Plaintiff has the burden of proving their case.? For those of you who have watched one of the legal dramas on television, you might have some idea of what this means.? ?However, unlike a criminal case where the prosecutors have to prove their case ?beyond a reasonable doubt?, in personal injury cases the Plaintiff typically has to prove their case on a lower standard known as the ?balance of probabilities?.

You may have seen a picture of the scales of justice.? The balance of probabilities is often described as tipping the scales of justice ever so slightly in your favour, whereas proving a case beyond a reasonable doubt requires a Jury to be 99% convinced of the facts presented to them.

At the beginning of the trial, the parties typically make opening statements. Each party will provide an outline of the evidence they expect the Jury to hear from the witnesses that will testify.

To prove the case at Trial you would give evidence and explain how your life has been changed as a result of the accident.? While on the stand you would describe how the accident happened and then tell the Jury what your life was like before the accident; what injuries you sustained in the incident, and then describe how these injuries have impacted your life.

To assist the Jury in understanding the profound changes to your life, other supporting witnesses will also give evidence.? Friends, family, co-workers, usually known as ?lay witnesses?, would testify about the changes they have noticed in you since the accident.

In addition, treating health care providers, as well as various experts will help the Jury understand your medical diagnosis and prognosis.? The number and type of experts that will give evidence at Trial will depend on your specific injuries.

Keep in mind that once you, or any other of the witnesses who appear on your behalf, give evidence, the Defendant?s lawyer will have the opportunity to conduct a cross examination.

During a Cross Examination the lawyer will ask a series of leading questions which are typically designed to have you make a series of admissions.? These admissions are then used to paint a picture which undermines your case.

Careful preparation is required to anticipate the avenues by which a defendant?s lawyer will attempt to frame your case in an unfavourable light.? We at Preszler Law Firm LLP have been down this path many times, and will help you avoid the pitfalls facing a witness.

Once the plaintiff has called all of their evidence, the defendant will then present its case in the same manner.? The plaintiff will also have the opportunity to cross examine each of the defendant?s witnesses.

Once all the evidence has been put to the Jury, the parties will then make their closing arguments.? In the closing argument each party has the chance to weave together all the evidence that has been presented in the hope of persuading the trier of fact to rule in their favour.

It is at this stage that we communicate the themes of your case, using battle tested narrative techniques to not just present the facts, but to put forward a compelling ?story? which explains who you are, and what has happened to you since the accident.

Once each party has made their closing statement, the Judge will give his ?charge? to the Jury.? In the charge, the Trial Judge instructs the Jury on what legal principles to consider when arriving at their verdict.

In a Civil Trial, the Trial Judge will then put a series of questions to the Jury to decide.? Five of six Jurors must agree to the answer of a question for there to be a verdict.? If one or more questions are posed to the Jury, it is not required that the same five people agree on each question.

The Jury will then start their deliberations until they either arrive at a verdict.? If the Jury is deadlocked this means that they could not get five of six people to agree on the answer to each question put to them.? If the Jurors are deadlocked, the Judge will declare a mistrial.? If there is a mistrial, the parties will come back and try the case again with a different Jury.

After reading this brief overview of what to expect at trial, you have likely come to appreciate why you need Preszler Law Firm LLP to represent you at Trial.? What this overview does not explain is the diligent work involved to prepare your case so that it is ready to be presented to a Jury.
