Lip-Sticking: Women's History Month: 5 Automotive Trailblazers

From the Editor's Desk: This came across our desks and we just had to pass it along. Enjoy!?

March is Women?s History Month and what better way for a car insurance company to celebrate than by Picture1 honoring some significant women in automotive history? Esurance?did a little digging and revealed the following list of automotive pioneers:

  • Next time you flick on your wipers, thank Mary Anderson, who was granted a patent for the windshield wiper in 1903
  • Alice Huyler is the first woman inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame
  • Silent film star Florence Lawrence invented??turn signals and brake lights
  • On New Year?s Day 1915, Wilma K. Russey became the first female New York City taxi driver?
  • In 1943, Helene Rother became the first female automotive designer. A French jewelry designer, she was hired by General Motors to fashion elegant interior designs.

Considering that at the dawn of the automobile era, women didn?t have the right to vote and were often deemed fragile and timid ? certainly not capable of running (or repairing) heavy machinery ? we really have come a long way, baby. Read more about these game-changers on the Esurance blog. ?

Palladium ? A Soft Silver-White Metal with Great Investment ...

Post image for Palladium ? A Soft Silver-White Metal with Great Investment Potential

As you know from reading this blog and other information on precious metals, these commodities have experienced an exponential growth in interest over the last few years. Economic uncertainty coupled with governments? response to it has fueled a tremendous bull market in metals like gold and silver.

But an often overlooked metals investment ? palladium ? is also worthy of consideration.

In addition to gold coins and silver bullion, investors like you can buy palladium coins and bars to further diversify your portfolio against the ticking time bomb known as debt and inflation.

But what exactly is palladium and what makes it so desirable?

Palladium is a soft silver-white metal that?s not too dissimilar to platinum. In fact, both metals belong to the same family, which is known as platinum group metals (PGMs). Other metals in this group include rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium.

Out of all of these metals, palladium has the lowest melting point and is the least dense.

Palladium, which has a symbol of ?Pd? on the Periodic Table of the Elements, was discovered in 1802 by William Hyde Wollaston, who named the metal after the asteroid Pallas. The British chemist discovered the metal in some crude platinum ore he acquired from South America. Wollaston separated the palladium by dissolving the ore in aqua regia and then heating it with a mixture of other chemicals.

In fact, much of the palladium in the Earth is mixed with platinum and other metals.

While deposits are scattered throughout the world, Russia is by far the largest producer (44%) followed by South Africa (40%), Canada (6%) and the U.S. (5%).

In terms of popularity, palladium really didn?t take off until the 1970s with the mass introduction of catalytic converters, which convert dangerous car exhaust gases like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide into less harmful gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapor.

Today, palladium is used for a wide variety of industrial applications like electronics, groundwater treatment, dentistry, jewelry and hydrogen purification. It?s even used in medicine and plays a key role in fuel cell technology.

Industrial use is one reason palladium is considered to be an investment worth considering. As more and more cars become outfitted with catalytic converters and more of the world?s population demand electronic devices like TVs and computers, the demand for palladium will go up.

But another reason is price.

Currently, palladium is trading for less than half the price of gold. While it has seen tremendous growth in the last decade, it has experienced a pull back and is currently considered by many to be at a good price level for buying.

How can I invest in palladium?

In terms of bullion, there are several options. The Canadian Mint produces a 1-oz palladium Maple Leaf coin or you can consider the Russian Ballerina coin. Pamp-Suisse palladium bars though are slightly less expensive and are available in 1-oz or 10-oz denominations.

It?s also been reported that the U.S. Mint is currently working on an American Palladium Eagle. While details are sketchy at this point, some believe it will be made available to the general public by the end of the year.

The Canadian Maple Leaf palladium coin can be included in a self-directed, precious metals IRA. We can safely assume the American Palladium Eagle will be approved for IRA accounts once it?s released.

As you can see from this activity, palladium is poised to be the next precious metals investment to gain widespread popularity. Check back with us often for updates on the American Palladium Eagle and other market updates on this exciting metal.

Will Ferrell announces 'Anchorman' sequel

(AP) ? Will Ferrell's swashbuckling newscaster Ron Burgundy had his own breaking news to announce Wednesday night: A sequel to "Anchorman" is finally happening.

Ferrell made a surprise, in-character appearance on "Conan" to regale the audience with a flute solo and declare a deal with Paramount Pictures. A sequel to the 2004 hit comedy, "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," has long been discussed.

Ferrell informed host Conan O'Brien: "It's official, there will be a sequel to 'Anchorman.'"

Earlier, Paramount had declined a musical plan put forth by Ferrell and director Adam McKay that also included a proposed Broadway stage show. No details on the project were immediately available but McKay, producer Judd Apatow, and co-stars Paul Rudd and Steve Carell are expected to return.

Bush endorsement leaves Romney focused on November

The Republican Party appears to be moving out of its primary fight to begin girding for a Romney-Obama matchup in the general election.

After a three-month struggle, Mitt Romney edged into the mop-up phase of the race for the Republican presidential nomination on Wednesday, buoyed by Newt Gingrich's decision to scale back his campaign to the vanishing point and Rick Santorum's statement that he would take the No. 2 spot on the party ticket in the fall.

Romney campaigned by phone for support in next week's Wisconsin primary while he shuttled from California to Texas on a fundraising trip, praising Gov. Scott Walker, for "trying to rein in the excesses that have permeated the public services union." The governor faces a recall election in June after winning passage of state legislation vehemently opposed by organized labor.

Romney aides eagerly spread the word that former President George H.W. Bush would bestow a formal endorsement on Thursday, although they declined to say whether former President George W. Bush has been asked for a public show of support. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a tea party favorite who had been neutral in the race, endorsed Romney Wednesday night, saying it was clear that he would be the nominee and that the primary fight should end.

Seven months before Election Day, there was ample evidence of a preparation gap with the Democrats.

A spokesman at the Republican National Committee said the party had recently opened campaign offices in three states expected to be battlegrounds this fall and would soon do the same in seven more.

By contrast, Obama's re-election campaign has 18 offices in Florida, nine in Michigan, a dozen in Ohio, 13 in Pennsylvania and seven in Nevada, according to officials. While Romney was campaigning in last winter's Iowa caucuses, Democrats claimed to have made 350,000 calls to voters as part of an early organizational effort.

And while Romney is still raising money for the second half of the primary campaign, Obama recently reported $84 million in the bank for the general election.

Not that Romney was leaving the primary wars behind. He and Restore Our Future, a super PAC that supports him, were outspending Santorum and his allies on television by a margin of more than 4-1, with an attack-heavy diet of television ads.

In addition, Romney's campaign attacked Santorum in a recorded message called into thousands of homes.

"I was shocked to find out that Rick Santorum repeatedly supported big labor and joined with liberal Democrats in voting against right-to-work legislation during his time in Washington," it says. "He even opposed the hiring of permanent replacements for striking workers. When it comes to big labor, Rick Santorum's record of opposing right-to-work legislation and standing with union bosses speaks for itself."

Google dives into personal analytics with new Account Activity feature

Image
We recently saw Stephen Wolfram reveal what he called the personal analytics of his life (built from decades of meticulous data collection), and it looks like Google is now going some way towards making that easier for you to do yourself. It rolled out its new Account Activity feature today, an opt-in tool (still technically in beta) that tracks your activity across Google's services and delivers a report each month on your internet use. That includes things like the number of emails sent and received, your most contacted email addresses, information about your search history (if you have it enabled), stats from Google Latitude, and the different browsers and devices you've used to sign into Google services. What's more, that's apparently just the beginning -- Google says it plans to incorporate even more services over the next few months.

Delicate dance for Pope Benedict in Cuba

Pope Benedict arrives in Cuba, 14 years after Pope John Paul's visit to the island. The Pope's visit is expected to help strengthen ties with the Cuban Catholic Church.??NBC's Mark Potter reports.

By Mark Potter , NBC News correspondent

HAVANA, Cuba ? At the historic San Francisco de Paula church, in a working-class neighborhood of Havana, Auxiliary Bishop Alfredo Petit recently walked the long hallways where priests, nuns and lay workers were busy caring for some of Cuba's elderly and infirm and also operating an orphanage. Outside the church is a sign welcoming the?pope: "Bienvenido a Cuba Benedicto XVI."

Petit hopes during the pontiff's three-day visit to the island his messages will provide an important boost for the Cuban Catholic Church and perhaps even inspire some gradual changes in Cuban society.? "I don't know what the words will be, but I think they will suggest more respect for human dignity,? he said.

Since the Cuban revolution in 1959, the Catholic Church has struggled to raise its public profile here. For decades, under the Marxist government of Fidel Castro, the church was ostracized and believers were punished. The country was officially declared atheist until the government loosened that description in the 1990's.

But, with Fidel Castro out of power now and his younger brother, Raul, in charge, the church has become much more accepted by the government. Recently, Cuban Cardinal Jamie Ortega negotiated the release of more than 100 political prisoners, although he was criticized by human rights activists after most of the?prisoners were sent into exile.

NBC analyst George Weigel discusses Pope Benedict's trip to Cuba and that Vatican's firm anti-communism stance.

"The church has now been accepted as a legitimate and important interlocutor of the government on sensitive topics like freeing political prisoners, the conditions of those in prison, the treatment of dissidents," said Jorge Dominguez, a professor at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.? "This is a wholly unprecedented role for the Roman Catholic in Cuba for the past half century."

With funds and supplies donated from overseas, the church also provides much-needed social services now as the government struggles to reshape Cuba's troubled economy. Church-run food banks and retirement homes along with medicine distribution centers have become lifelines many of Cuba's extremely poor.

"It is very convenient for the government that the church will engage in activities providing for people in need," said Juan Clark, a Miami Dade College professor emeritus and an expert on the Cuban Church.

Still, tensions remain over the issues of religious and personal freedoms.

Last year, the church convinced state security to stop harassing the "Ladies in White," a church-based dissident group. However, two weekends ago, three-dozen members of the group were detained during a protest march in Havana. Ironically, 13 other dissidents who recently sought sanctuary in a Havana basilica were turned over by church officials to police, sparking accusations the church may have actually grown too close to Cuban leaders.

Pope Benedict is now urging Cuba to find new alternatives to Marxism ? patiently and peacefully ? as the Catholic Church maintains a delicate relationship with the Communist government here.?

The pope?s first stop on Monday will be Santiago de Cuba, the island's second city where he will celebrate a large open-air mass. On Tuesday, he visits the town of El Cobre, home to a tiny wooden statue of Our Lady of Charity, a symbol revered by all Cubans ? Catholic and non-Catholic alike.

Later that day he flies to Havana for what is expected to be a meeting with both Raul and Fidel Castro. On Wednesday morning he will celebrate another mass in Havana before departing the country.

Can I Rent Without Going Through The Realtor? | REALTOR.com ...

questions

Q: I?m in the market to rent an apartment and my real estate agent has been both lying to me and potentially misrepresenting me to the landlord. Am I within my rights to terminate the contract and pursue the rental with the landlord directly? PS: the apartment is even listed through the Realtor. The property manager is directly advertising his properties though this one hasn?t officially hit the market yet.

Thanks!
?Boston, Boston, MA

A: If you have signed an agreement with this Realtor, please refer to it for terms/conditions under which one party can terminate it unilaterally. If you also feel that this agent is being unethical, address your issues directly. Should that not resolve the issue, contact the Broker-In-Charge for this agent?s brokerage.
Alex Cortez is a Realtor? with Wailea Village Properties LLC dba/Island Sotheby?s in Kihei, HI.

A: I am not quite sure what the situation or relationships are, but if you have an Agency relationship established by a formal contract with your real estate agent, then you need to formally fire them. But typically the relationship exists between an individual and the Broker, not the Agent.

First, review the agency document you signed and see if there are specific conditions that give you the right to cancel at anytime. Then the right way to do it is to write to the Broker for the office, who has the decision making ability.

I always let a client out of an Agency relationship when they ask, I promise 24 hours notice but you are faced with a different problem, fired or not if they have what is known as ?procuring cause? they may still be due compensation for when you rent that, or any other property they showed you in your rental search. Another issue may be that the contract the agent has with the unit owner may prevent him from renting it to anyone that was introduced to the property by the agent giving the agent a protection period as it is commonly called.

Your question implies a perception of impropriety on the part of your agent, if that truly is the case you should contact the Broker to discuss it and also review state license laws and how they apply to the experience you had.

I am so sorry it has been less than a stellar experience with your REALTOR. It might just be simpler to just deal with the possible personality conflict and follow through to get the rental unit you want.

I hope that helps! And thanks for using Ask a REALTOR on Realtor.com

Museum tells story of Titanic survivor Molly Brown

DENVER (AP) ? Thousands of miles from the ocean, a museum tells the story of a woman made famous by the Titanic. No, her name was not Rose, and a movie about her life, "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," starring Debbie Reynolds as a plucky lifeboat survivor, was a hit decades before Kate Winslet's doomed romance in "Titanic."

Molly Brown was a real person, but the movie created a myth that the museum, located in Brown's Denver home, attempts to dispel.

Born in 1867 to Irish immigrants in Hannibal, Mo., Brown struck it rich, with her husband, from a Colorado gold mine years before she boarded the Titanic, and in later years, she fought for women's suffrage and labor rights.

No one called her Molly during her lifetime ? her name was Margaret ? and biographer Kristen Iversen, author of "Molly Brown: Unraveling the Myth," writes that there's no proof she ever referred to herself as "unsinkable." The nickname seems to have originated with a Denver gossip columnist who may have been mad that Brown gave her account of the Titanic disaster to a newspaper in Newport, R.I., where she also spent time. Iversen says two books written in the 1930s created the image of Brown as a gun-packing, wisecracking former saloon girl, accounts that became the basis of the Broadway play and later the 1964 musical starring Reynolds. Molly Brown also appears in James Cameron's "Titanic," portrayed by Kathy Bates.

Brown eventually separated from her husband and, unlike on screen, they never reunited. That gave her the freedom to indulge in travel, and in 1912, she headed to Egypt with John Jacob Astor and his wife. She cut the trip short to visit her ailing grandson back in the U.S., and set sail on the Titanic from France, where the ship made one stop to pick up passengers and provisions.

Brown wrote that she was watching from a deck after the Titanic hit the iceberg and was thrown into lifeboat No. 6. She rowed all night with its mostly female crew until the rescue ship Carpathia arrived.

Before the disaster, Brown was well known in the Mile High City for her charity and social reform work, such as fundraising to build Immaculate Conception Cathedral and mountain camps for poor children and orphans. After the sinking, she gained fame for raising money from rich Titanic survivors to help poorer passengers, making sure they had a place to go when they got to New York.

In 1914, she was called on to help ease tensions after 20 people, including women and children, died when the National Guard opened fire on striking coal miners and set fire to a tent colony in Ludlow, an operation owned by John D. Rockefeller. Brown also helped with relief efforts during World War I and ran for the U.S. Senate in 1914, six years before women could vote nationally.

The museum, a few blocks from the state Capitol, is offering Titanic-themed tours this year and some recent visitors sang songs from the musical on the front porch as they waited to begin. At the end, they were surprised to learn that Brown, despite having just an eighth-grade education, spoke several languages ? which came in handy with the Titanic's international collection of passengers ? and had planned to take another trip on the Titanic, in part to take advantage of its well-stocked library.

Some of her own books are included in the museum's library, which like the rest of the home is lit by dim 15-watt bulbs like the ones she used. Upstairs, there's a copy of Brown's Titanic insurance claim, recording the loss of items including 14 hats, "street furs" and a $20,000 necklace. There are no Titanic items in the stone Victorian ? which was saved from demolition in 1970 ? thought there is a binnacle, a nonmagnetic stand that held navigational instruments, from the Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic.

Brown followed her brother to the mining town of Leadville, Colo., when she was 18 and got a job in a dry goods store. After marrying mining engineer J.J. Brown, she moved out of town to be closer to the mines during the winter.

Janet Kalstrom, a retired banking project manager who has been the museum's Brown impersonator for six years, said that the five-mile trip is a rough 45 minutes by four-wheel drive today and may hold some clues to Brown's toughness.

"Adventure ran in her blood so the strength and courage came from just plugging away," she said.

Brown died in 1932 in New York City while pursuing another lifelong passion ? acting.

To mark the Titanic anniversary, the museum is hosting a six-course meal, like first-class ship passengers might have had, on April 14 at Denver's historic Oxford Hotel. Brown's great-granddaughter, Muffet Laurie Brown ? the daughter of the baby grandchild Brown was rushing home to see ? will attend the benefit gala. In August, the museum plans a more affordable Steerage Class Shindig, featuring beer and an Irish band.

This is a very important consideration for the business. It demands a process which is skipped majority of the time. It is the process of validating your market in its entirety. This is a crucial step in the identification of the profit potential for your market. Although there is no hard and fast rule that can guarantee you success, nevertheless, there are certain steps that can be followed in order to give your business a promising chance. These steps are briefly mentioned below.

Is there a demand for your product or service?

This involves the calculation of the total number of potential customers that will be purchasing your product. Are the customers in the segment have overcome the problem or still suffering from it? This gives an idea of the amount of people interested in the product. a lot of surveys have been conducted on various products and people's taste and preferences. You can take the assistance from these surveys in order to analyze your 's profit potential.

Secondly, the internet has become one of the most economical commodities in the modern world. It contains vast amount of information on variety of issues and subjects out of which majority of them can be accessed freely. Hence, typing your product keyword in the search box of popular search engines, you can get a fair amount of idea of how much profit can be earned for your product.

Furthermore, if the product is an online product and you are promoting on your blog or website, you can check out whether it involves the adequate advertiser's base in key PPC (Pay per Click) Advertising networks. It is known that Yahoo Publishers Network (YPN) and Google AdSense are the two most popular PPC programs on the internet. Thus, you can make use of the above programs to track down the amount of traffic and average CPC for your important keywords for AdWords/AdSense.

Is there any competitor that is already targeting your segment?

It is very important for your business to know in advance the products that have been sold by your rivals. If you come across the competitors that are already selling your product, it is advisable to analyze their business and products more deeply rather than switching your product. This strategy involves the SWOT analysis of their product in order to identify the elements that you can improve, enhance or modify. This move will put you ahead of your rivals and would give a solid reason to the customers to switch to your product.

Does you product has a high lifetime value?

The term lifetime value implies the sum of the value of each consumer to your product as they are perceived to buy from you on a regular basis. The questions that you need to ask yourself are the following:

1) Is it easy for you to transform one-time buyer into regular buyer?

2) Will there be related products beside your main product for your customers to build long-lasting and valuable relationship with them?

The fact of the matter is if you are selling out one product, it is not at all inappropriate to come up with other related products as it is much easy to sell to regular buyer than finding a new one.

INFORMATION & TECHNOLOGY

WRITTEN BY: SHAFAT TAHIR 23 MAY 2010

Today, the term information has blown up to include many aspects of computing and skill, and the term has become very identifiable. IT professionals perform a range of duties that range from installing applications to designing multifarious computer networks and information databases. A small number of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as the management and administration of entire systems. Information technology is opening to spread farther than the predictable personal computer and network technology, and more into integrations of other technologies such as the use of mobiles, televisions, automobiles, and much more, which is rising the demand for such jobs.

When computer and communications technologies are united, the result is information technology, or ?InfoTech?. Information technology is a common term that describes any technology that helps to produce, direct, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information.

In fresh days ABET and the ACM have collaborated to form certification and curriculum standards for degrees in Information Technology as a discrete field of study separate from both Computer Science and Information Systems. SIGITE is the ACM working group for defining these values. The Worldwide IT services revenue is $ 763 billion in 2009.COMPUTERSIt is playing an important role in the field of information and technology. As it is consider the most important & useful machine of 20th century. It computer is a programmable machine that receives input, stores and manipulates data, and provides output in a useful set-up.

HISTORYAlthough automatic examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century. These were the size of a large room, and were called 1st generation computers. They consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers or 4th generation computers are based on integrated circuits which are in millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small fit into small pocket devices, and can be powered by a small battery. Personal computers in their variety of forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as ?computers?. However, the entrenched computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are the most numerous. MOBILE PHONESA mobile phone is an electronic device used for mobile telecommunications over a cellular system of base stations known as cell sites. Mobile phones vary from freestyle telephones, which only offer telephone service within partial range through a single base station attached to a set line, for example within a home or an office. Low-end mobile phones are often referred to as feature phones, whereas high-end mobile phones that offer more advanced computing capability are referred to as smart phones.

A mobile phone allows its users to make and receive telephone calls to and from the public telephone network which includes other mobiles and fixed line phones crosswise the world. A key feature of the cellular network is that it enables seamless telephone calls even when the user is moving around wide areas via a process known as handoff or handover.

In addition to being a telephone, modern mobile phones also support many additional services, and accessories, such as SMS (or text) messages, email, Internet access, gaming, Bluetooth, infrared, camera, MMS messaging, MP3 player, radio and GPS.

TiVo Premiere 500GB coming Sunday along with lower prices for service, XL and Elite DVRs

The new TiVo Premiere featuring an upgraded 500GB hard drive (65 percent more storage than the old 320GB unit) that we spotted this morning is official, and will start shipping March 25th -- but that's not it. As we also noted, it only requires a one year service agreement at $14.99 per month or $12.99 for users with multiple boxes, which is cheaper than last year's $19.99 / month package (Lifetime Service is still available as well). If you need more hard drive space, THX Certification or more tuners then you're also in luck, as price cuts are in order for the 1TB Premiere XL (down $50 to $249) and the 2TB Elite models (down $100 to $399). The new pricing should let multi-TiVo homes compete even better with cable company DVR offerings, and once the new multiroom boxes arrive this summer things should only get better. Stake out various online retailers or your local Best Buy to snag one or three on Sunday, but until then check out the press release after the break for all of the numbers.

Fallen Aussie tycoon and FBI's net-bet supergrass to star in US trial - 21st March 2012...

Daniel Tzvetkoff, the one-time high-flying Queensland internet whiz who brought down America's multibillion-dollar online poker industry, will come out of hiding next month.

The 29-year-old faced a sentence of 75 years in a US federal prison but in 2010, while languishing in a New York jail, he struck a secret deal with prosecutors and has become a star informant for the US government in its bid to prosecute the kingpins of three of the world's largest online gambling companies: PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker.

AAP can reveal that Tzvetkoff, whose Queensland-based company Intabill allegedly processed more than $US1 billion ($957 million) worth of illegal transactions between US gamblers and internet gaming websites based offshore, has handed more than 90,000 documents over to prosecutors.

The inside information includes confidential emails.

Tzvetkoff's first public test as a prosecution witness will come on April 9 in a New York courtroom when a former Las Vegas-based business partner, Chad Elie, and a Utah banker, John Campos, go on trial.

Elie, 31, is charged with nine offences including conspiring to commit bank fraud and money laundering and faces a maximum jail sentence of 85 years if convicted.

Campos, a 57-year-old executive at Utah's SunFirst Bank who allegedly agreed to process gambling transactions, is charged with six offences and could be jailed for 35 years.

This week, Elie's lawyers complained to the judge handling the case that, on the eve of the trial, prosecutors dumped a "mountain of documents" on them, including Tzvetkoff's emails.

"For example, although the government had previously produced emails for Daniel Tzvetkoff, one of the government's main witnesses in this case, the material we recently received revealed that Mr Tzvetkoff had deleted his emails from the Intabill server, which had previously been made available to the defence, and that the Tzvetkoff emails that were included in prior productions were therefore ones that Mr Tzvetkoff had cherry-picked for the government," Monday's filing from Elie's lawyers, Barry Berke and Dani James, stated.

"Only after we pointed this out to the government did we receive a full set of Mr Tzvetkoff's materials, which included more than 90,000 documents and which we were able to access for the first time only yesterday."

Tzvetkoff was once a media darling in Australia, flaunting his wealth - estimated at $82 million just a few years ago - with a $27 million home on the Gold Coast, a garage filled with Lamborghinis and Ferraris, and as a sponsor of V8 Supercar racing team, Team IntaRacing.

His world came crashing down in 2009 when the internet poker companies, for which he allegedly helped launder $US1 billion, accused him of stealing about $US100 million.

Tzvetkoff was arrested at Las Vegas's upmarket Encore casino in April 2010 and charged with money laundering, bank fraud and other charges.

US federal prosecutors vigorously fought to keep Tzvetkoff in jail after his arrest, including successfully overturning a Las Vegas judge's decision to grant Tzvetkoff bail.

Tzvetkoff was transferred to a New York jail and sat there until June 2010 but, in secret dealings, sealed by judges, Tzvetkoff disappeared.

"He's turned the corner, seen the light and is co-operating," former FBI agent Harold Copus, after reviewing the details of the case, told AAP.

On April 15, 2011, Tzvetkoff's inside knowledge led to what has been dubbed in the US as "Black Friday", the day tens of thousands of US poker players logged on to their computers and discovered three top gambling sites - PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker - had been shut down in the US by authorities.

The FBI and prosecutors also announced that day internet gambling kingpins Isai Scheinberg and Paul Tate of PokerStars, Raymond Bitar and Nelson Burtnick of Full Tilt Poker, and Scott Tom and Brent Beckley of Absolute Poker, were charged with bank fraud, money laundering and illegal gambling offences.

Elie and Campos were also charged in the sweep.

Prosecutors alleged Elie, as Tzvetkoff's Intabill was crumbling in 2009, fleeced $US4 million from PokerStars.

"Intabill's founder, Daniel Tzvetkoff, who processed over $US1 billion for the poker companies, ended up owing tens of millions to PokerStars," prosecutor Arlo Deviln-Brown wrote in a recent court filing.

"While Tzvetkoff's lifestyle is squarely responsible for much of the missing money ($US25 million on a house, for example), the fact is that 'sub-processors' that Tzvetkoff relied on - including Elie - also failed to remit and indeed simply made off with the money PokerStars was missing." (AAP)

Auckland High Court grants Kim Dotcom $46,700 a month expenses...

A NEW Zealand court has granted Megaupload boss Kim Dotcom $46,700 a month in living expenses as he awaits a US bid to extradite him on online piracy charges.

The German national reportedly applied for $171,240 a month to cover his costs when he was freed on bail last month, including funds to pay for luxuries such as a butler and nannies.

The High Court in Auckland ruled Dotcom, who US authorities allege violated piracy laws to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, could have $46,700 a month, Fairfax Media reported.

It also gave the internet tycoon - a keen car enthusiast - access to a 2011 Mercedes Benz, The New Zealand Herald reported.

The 38-year-old's assets were frozen after New Zealand police, cooperating with a major US probe, raided his sprawling Auckland mansion on January 20, seizing artworks and luxury cars including a pink Cadillac.

Megaupload was founded in 2005 but shut down in January after the Auckland raid.

A US application for Dotcom's extradition is expected to be heard on August 20. US authorities have said they will seek the maximum penalty of 20 years in jail if he is brought before an American court.

Dotcom, who legally changed his name from Kim Schmitz, has denied any wrongdoing and vowed to fight extradition, labelling the case against him "misleading and malicious."

Casino rewards cards examined in hunt for cheats...

CASINO rewards cards could be the next secret weapon used by Centrelink and the Australian Taxation Office to take down frauds and welfare cheats.

The Absolute Rewards program, which is available through Queensland's three major casinos, is being considered by investigators as a way to nab dodgy individuals suspected of breaking the law.

Absolute Rewards allows members through its Absolute Assist function to set a daily gambling limit of their choice and tracks their spending to ensure machines lock users out when their limit is reached.

A Treasury Casino spokeswoman confirmed members were able to ask for summaries of their spending history.

By cross-referencing the spending with other documents, investigators could potentially determine whether fraud had taken place.

Section 264 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 allows officers to obtain documents or data they require to further their probe.

An ATO spokeswoman said the office "would not rule out" using Absolute Rewards and Absolute Assist information to investigate targets.

"From time to time, we do use our powers under S264 to obtain information on individuals from third parties (such as casinos and other businesses) which may assist us to identify undisclosed income," she said.

"We would not rule out the possibility of using such a system to access information in the future."

Centrelink may also begin using rewards cards to track down welfare cheats.

Department of Human Services general manager Hank Jongen said while information hadn't so far been obtained through the system, it was a possibility.

"Based on the available information, the department would only seek to access details through the Absolute Assist program on an individual basis during an investigation into a customer's undisclosed wealth," he said.

A Treasury Casino spokeswoman said the casino had provided government agencies with information at their request.

Queensland Council for Civil Liberties president Michael Cope said he couldn't foresee any privacy issues provided the method was used only to investigate those already under suspicion. (News Limited)

Sports betting growing gambling...

The Aussie tradition of taking a punt is reaching new heights with online gambling leading to an explosion in sports betting.

Although still dwarfed by other forms of gambling, sports betting is gaining popularity, according to industry research group IBISWorld.

Sports betting was the fastest growing market segment, with annual growth of 14.7 per cent for the last five years.

IBISWorld Australian general manager Karen Dobie said sports betters were mostly young, single professionals with disposable income. They did not view it as a serious form of gambling.

'Sports betting is most accessible online. Given this demographic is particularly comfortable in the online environment, this is another factor driving growth,' Ms Dobie said in a statement on Wednesday.

The diversity of bets on offer, including who leads at half time and shoots the first goal was also driving spending.

Despite its rising popularity, sports betting accounts for only 1.6 per cent, or $360.5 million, of gambling spend.

Casino gambling accounts for 20 per cent of total expenditure, the research found.

Pokies, lotteries and racing were in decline, but pokies still took the lion's share of the market with 60.2 per cent.

Australians are among the most prolific gamblers in the world with the research predicting gambling expenditure to reach $22.5 billion or an average of $1,256 per person in 2011/12.

'More than 70 per cent of us have a flutter at least once a year, especially in line with key cultural events such as Anzac Day and the Melbourne Cup,' Ms Dobie said.

NSW had the most gamblers, making up 38 per cent of gambling spending, followed by Victoria and Queensland.

Strange features on Mercury upend thinking about 'first rock from sun'

New results from NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft show Mercury to have features unlike anything scientists have seen elsewhere in the solar system. Here's one: a huge core for a planet this size.

From its bizarre multilayer core to its thin crinkly crust, Mercury is revealing itself as a fun house among planets.

New results from NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft reveal craters with tilted floors. In one large basin, half of the basin floor sits higher than the basin's rim. A vast volcanic plain sports a tall, broad lump,?with no obvious source for the rise. The planet's interior is dominated by a core structured vaguely like a peanut M&M ? a solid-iron center, a molten iron layer, covered with a thin, dense shell. And Mercury's equator traces a slight ellipse, rather than a circle.

All in all, the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury is revealing the planet with many features unlike anything researchers have seen anywhere else in the solar system.

After looking at MESSENGER's data so far, ?I understand far less than I used to? about Mercury, says Maria Zuber, a planetary scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, who leads a team analyzing the planet's surface features. ?But I know more.?

One key message: Mercury has been geologically active through far more of its 4.6-billion-year evolution than previously thought.

Mercury is the solar system's munchkin planet ? slightly larger than the moon. Given its size, ?there was good reason to believe that Mercury cooled off early, and there hasn't been much of anything going on for most of its history,? Dr. Zuber says. But the evidence the team has gathered suggests that the broad, oddly deformed features they see in the planet's northern hemisphere were formed when the planet was well into middle age, she says.

The MESSENGER team unveiled its latest results Wednesday during a four-day planetary-science meeting in Woodland, Texas. The formal research papers are being published this week on Science Express, the online outlet for the journal Science.

Until MESSENGER arrived, only 40 percent of the planet had been mapped, focused on its eastern and western hemispheres. The maps were built from data gathered by NASA's Mariner 10 mission, which conducted flybys of Venus and Mercury. Messenger orbits Mercury's poles, giving full coverage of the planet.

An inside-outside tour the team provides begins with a core once thought to take up some 75 percent of the planet's radius ? far larger than the core of any other planet compared with the planet's size. Speculation on the reason for such a large core centers on a collision early in Mercury's history that would have knocked much of its initial crust and mantle off the planet ? with enough power to blast the material well out of Mercury's orbit.

Measurements of the planet's gravity field, based on radio tracking of subtle variations in gravity imparted to MESSENGER's orbit over the past year, have revealed a core that takes up fully 85 percent of the planet's radius. Moreover, the measurements were key in revealing a triple-layer core ? a probable solid-iron center, surrounded by molten iron, then encased in a shell of iron sulfide.

Single Writer Mama - Blogs - SeattlePI.com

Stripping Down, a brave memoir by ex-stripper turned mother and yoga instructor, was released last month by Seattle?s own Pink Fish Press. Pink Fish Press was founded by Renda Dodge and is co-operated by Senior Editor Sarah Martinez. It is a new independent press with hopes of distinguishing itself from other presses by the comprehensive help they offer their authors throughout the entire publishing and marketing process.

Stripping Down weaves Sheila?s past as a stripper, along with her more recent struggle with trying to balance mothering a small child while working and caring for her mother who was dying of cancer. What impressed me the most about Sheila?s story is her honesty. No topic is glossed over or left untouched. Along with stripping, she acted in some adult movies as well as had a brief stint as a dominatrix. Knowing she is a mother now, I could easily excuse her from failing to mention this in her memoir. But she doesn?t. Even better, she doesn?t glamorize her colored past nor is she merely trying to arouse and shock us, like so many current memoirs do. Instead of relying on titillation, she narrates her story with honesty and vulnerability. And she doesn?t solely reveal sexy, although perhaps controversial topics, she explores the mundane areas of life as well such as depression, fears about her parenting, and the doldrums that go along with motherhood and caretaking. This is what I look for in a memoir?a willingness to reveal oneself fully. Too many memoirs shy away from such well-rounded honesty and instead want to claim their life was extraordinary in how awful it was without ever making themselves vulnerable. In doing so, we can be shocked, horrified or amused by their story, but we don?t have any compassion nor care about the narrator, because they have not revealed themselves to the reader. As Jung says, ?That which is most personal is most common.?

After reading Stripping Down, I had so many questions about Sheila?s writing process and life in general. I emailed her for an interview and she readily agreed. She currently lives in Connecticut with her three children and husband. She?s always been a writer, but formalized this desire by receiving an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Hunter College, where she also graduated as valedictorian in January 2002. She teaches composition and creative writing through Hunter College, Housatonic Community College, Kaplan University and the College of New Rochelle. Sheila is also a certified and nationally registered yoga teacher.

CL: Were you already a mother when you decided to write about stripping? If so, did that weigh on your decision?

SH: I?ve been writing about stripping from the first time I danced when I was eighteen. Years later, when my daughter was one, I committed seriously to writing by going for my MFA in Creative Writing. I then knew I would be writing a memoir that had to do with stripping, but as I worked, I discovered the story involved much more.

I never worried about the fact that I was a mother or that I had a little girl. I?ve always felt comfortable about what I have done with my life, perhaps to the frustration of some people. I think having a baby girl was just more fuel for the desire to write my memoir because I want my daughter to be able to read honest stories of women?s lives, even when they involve ?unsavory? parts of me.

CL: Stripping Down not only reveals your past as a stripper, but also about infidelities, body issues, sexuality, cancer, and many other subjects people shy away from. What gives you courage to be so honest in your writing?

SH: I guess I have had this burning inside of me my whole life to be honest with the world. I took writing very seriously as a little girl; I had this feeling that being as honest as possible was the best way to reveal deeper truths. When I wrote about real life, people stopped and listened. It felt kind of like a magical power. If I told my experiences in story form, listeners seemed to understand me better. Perhaps because I was so shy talking to people, writing was my way of being heard, of feeling in control of my life and experience.

Since then, I?ve had this drive to be as honest as possible; I?ve always felt that if I speak the truth, people will care what I have to say. And there?s something more; it is cathartic to tell the truth. If there is nothing I need to hide, I will be free. No one will be able to hurt me.

CL: So many writers become blocked because they worry about what others will think of their story. Do you have a Phantom, as Virginia Woolf calls it, that you need to kill in order to write? Mine is my son?s teacher. I live in fear that she?ll read one of my articles that involves sex.

SH: I think my phantom is plural! They are my grown-up children. The way I?ve come to terms with my concerns about their reading my work, which I?m sure one day they will, is that it pushed me to raise them better and more consciously. It?s kind of like a challenge to raise them well-enough and open-minded enough that they won?t judge me.

Could that backfire on me? Sure. Maybe my kids will read my work and think I?m some horrible person, but I hope not. I can only hope that my honesty will make up for any embarrassment or anger that could arise from the people close to me.

It?s not so much my own stories I fear telling, it?s those of the people who are important to me. That?s the hardest part of writing memoir, having to weigh the benefits and risks involved in exposing others? ?secrets.? I never set out to hurt anyone, but at the same time how can I not talk about the people who affect my life, my story? I try to be as honest as possible while still honoring others? well-being.

CL: As an ex-stripper and now yoga teacher, how do you teach your children about their bodies and sexuality?

SH: I still think honesty is the best policy in these issues with kids, too. Of course, we take their level of understanding into account in everything, but it?s all just come naturally so far.

My husband and I are so comfortable with our own bodies so we hope to pass that on to our own kids by example. I?m always on guard for any discomfort from my daughter?she?s seven?but so far, she?s shown no signs of wanting to be more private. And it hasn?t resulted in my kids wanting to walk around naked everywhere or anything. They?re just comfortable with how different bodies look.

We?re taking it as it comes and hoping to approach all the questions that arise as honestly as possible.

CL: What was the worst criticism someone said or emailed you? How did you respond?

SH: Yes, I?ve been criticized for what I did, but I don?t think any of the external criticism ever could match the self-criticism I wallowed in for years. It took me a long time to completely accept who I was and that all the things I did, even the things that were clearly mistakes, made me who I am today.

I don?t think there?s anything anyone could say that would bother me now, but that?s because I?ve come to acceptance. People may have different opinions, but this is me. And that was me. And I can?t change things from the past; I can just be the best person I can be now.

CL: How do you balance your writing, teaching, speaking, yoga practice, time for yourself and family?

SH: Balance is a daily task that I try to figure out and perfect, but to no success. Well, I suppose I am successful in that I can do many of the things I love in one day, but not every day.

There truly is no way for me to have it all every day in every way right now. So some things are sacrificed. I prioritize and get what I can get done during the day. And then there?s always the nighttime after the kids are in bed. My husband and I sit at our computers working late into the night.

It?s funny?when I was single I would waste hours a day on trivial things like watching television and I?d get nothing creative done. It seems the busier I am, the more productive I become; I think it?s because I understand the preciousness of every minute now.

I probably do need to slow down a bit though. I?ve lost most ?fun? time from my schedule. I need to find small ways to be kinder to myself and my own needs.

CL: What?s next for you?

SH: In the immediate, I am working to learn and apply everything I can about marketing and publicity for Stripping Down. I am really enjoying the process so far. It feels good to promote this book because I feel so proud of what I?ve accomplished. I feel like this is a story that so many women?and men?will be able to relate to on some level.

And I have about half-a-dozen other projects in the works, from a graphic memoir, to a poetry chapbook, to a romance novel. There is this urge in me to try all types of different media and genre to express the heart of memoir through.

I?d also like to teach more memoir workshops and encourage more people to express their pasts honestly, to at least set out on the journey of self-exploration and self-knowledge. If I can move a few people toward bravely mining their pasts for answers and the roots of their journeys in life so far, I will feel I?ve done some good in the world.
