Risk of Prostate Cancer Increased by NSAID | PainKiller Awareness

?

Finnish researchers just released a report at the 27th Annual Congress of European Association of Urology stating that Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), do not decrease the risk of prostate cancer contrary to reports in previous years.

In the 1990s, a study was conducted by the Mayo Clinic.? 1,362 men between the ages of 50-79 were randomly selected. They were excluded if they were diagnosed or had a history of prostate cancer or other conditions known to affect normal urinary tract function.? Participants were required to complete a self-administered questionnaire to assess medical history, urinary tract symptoms, and sociodemographics.? Via interview,? researchers discovered the daily medications that were consumed and the participants family history.? Biennially this information was reassessed by researchers.? The research produced results stating that NSAID users had the odds of 23/569 (4%) versus nonusers odds of 68/793 (9%) developed prostate cancer during follow-up.? With these results, the researchers released the information that NSAIDs can decrease the risk for prostate cancer. There are some holes in this research to be able to make that statement.

Between the years of 1995-2002, Dr. Teemu J. Murtola, M.D, led a team of researchers at the University of Tampere School of Medicine.? They started by finding newly diagnosed patients with Prostate cancer cases in Finland and paired these with 24, 657 controls.

?

Murtola stated, ?The major difference between our study and most of the previous studies is the source of information on NSAID usage, in our study the information came from national prescription databases, whereas most of the previous studies relied on survey information, i.e., on self-reported data.? Dr. Murtola?s data is also distinctively more detailed than the studies prior to this research, he stated, ?Because all NSAIDs in our study were prescribed by a physician, all users for certain had an indication for the usage,? on the contrary, previous researches had used participants using prescription free NSAIDs for short amounts of time.

?

For the study, Dr. Murtola?s group calculated that the cumulative COX-2 (an enzyme responsible for inflammation and pain) inhibition by multiplying the total cumulative amount of each NSAID used with the drug-specific COX-1/COX-2 inhibition ratios.? They also accounted for the NSAID use to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension. From this the researchers deduced a propensity score for each participant. The study revealed that NSAID usage is associated with increased prostate cancer risk regardless of the quantity of COX-2 inhibition caused by the usage.

?

Men who had ever used NSAIDs had a 31% increased risk of prostate cancer overall and a 63% increased risk of advanced prostate cancer.

?

The researchers cannot be sure that the increased risks are related to NSAID use alone, perhaps the reason the NSAID was consumed is an instigator in the cancer as well, but they know for sure they can say the old research, stating that the use of NSAIDs lowers the risk of prostate cancer, is no longer a valid deduction of research.
